I usually have 3 to 5 cats in bed with me at night and I've often joked that Smoky always has a "I'm going to kill you in your sleep" look in his eyes

There's an old wive's tale that one should not let a cat in a room with a sleeping baby.

Apparently over decades / centuries / millennia enough babies have suffocated when a cat tried to sleep on this nice warm object, to generate this old wive's tale.

But since it's just an old wive's tale it cannot be counted as any kind of rational scientific evidence.

After all, anecdotes are not evidence.

I do know my cats used to get in bed with me, which was OK, but then their purring while they settled in for comfort and their "kneading" me kept me awake for a while.

Hmmmmm.  I've never had a cat try to sleep on my head.
Have one now that curls up in a "valley"  on the bed cover between my legs, or, off to the side.  I've had previous cats that snuck under the sheets.

I'm a bit surprised this guy needed a camera to figure out what was happening.

Same here. Mine is incredibly affectionate. She'll crawl into bed around 2-4AM, cuddle up next to me, and often lay one of her paws on my hand. I don't like when she crawls on top of the blanket between my legs though, because she fights me with her weight when I want to turn over.

I wouldn't say that cat was trying to kill its owner so much as it was indifferent and his face made a nice warm pad to lay on.

The ONLY thing that keeps them from killing us is the size disparity. I also believe that if we fall over dead they will not hesitate to eat us after a few days. ;)

Probably the later.  As much as I like 'em, cats can be that.  Mine expresses her a-hole-Ness by sitting on my toilet seat cover and unrolling the toilet paper at 4:30AM. ;/
