M17/M18 pistols - problems resolved?
« on: October 03, 2018, 05:05:58 PM »
Can anyone point me to some recent information on problems/resolutions with the Army's new handguns? The problems I've read about include:

Weapons discharging when dropped on the back of the slide/beavertail

Failures to feed ball ammunition

Ejecting live ammo while cycling

Shooters riding the slide stop, so that the slide closes on an empty chamber

I don't have any links, but AFAIK, the drop-firing problem has been solved.

I never heard about the feeding and ejecting issues.

Riding the slide stop is probably caused in part by where the thumb safety is located.  That should be an easy fix by adjusting one's grip.  I have the same problem with H&K pistols.

They resolved the drop test issues on the P320.  They claimed the Military version had a different trigger and never had the same issue.

I heard about the failure to feed ball ammo, but that was a year or more ago.  I have no  idea what the actual failure rate was.

I never heard of ejecting live ammo with the Sig.  I have had that happen with my Walther PPQ 45 ACP.  When shooting hot self defense loads.  I had that happen a few times where the muzzle flip was bad enough the next round in the mag flew out.  If you hold it more firmly, it did happen.  If that gun weighs 30 ounces, 29.9 ounces of the weight is in the slide.  So when it recoils, most of the weight of the gun is moving around.  The 9mm pistols might be better, but I don't care for the 45.

I have heard people talk about the issues, but I have never seen an actual military report on it (at least nothing recent).  Lately it is just people griping who don't like it and repeating the issues from early on.  Maybe Glock fans, but I don't know.

Here's one write-up I've found, if anyone else is interested.

Speaking of which, I am going to pick up a 4 inch stainless GP 100 tomorrow. I have been looking for ages for a 4 inch stainless Security Six to no avail, so the GP 100 it is.

Oh, please. Revolvers are junk. The stupid things only eject once every six rounds. And they don't even have a slide stop!
