UN report predicts catastrophic consequences if greenhouse gas emissions not reduced by 2030

Quote
The report, released late Sunday by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says the world needs to decrease emissions by 45 percent by 2030, or else the atmosphere could hit 1.5 degrees of warming by then.

At that level of warming — as measured as the Earth’s average temperature compared with pre-industrial levels — up to 90 percent of tropical coral reefs could die, Arctic warming could cause multiple feet of sea level rise and yields of key crops would drop.

Looks like new climate change predictions have been set.  Everyone set your calendars.

Will Climate Change still be a thing in 2030?  Probably so.

I predict the un will be more catastrophic than climate change.

There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

So, according to the U.N., the Vikings should be able to start farming on Greenland again within a few years. I wonder if they'll allow the U.S. to keep our air base there when that happens.

Yes.  Canada and Siberia will be the new breadbasket of the world.  Move all our trading ports to the Northern coasts of Canada.  We might just have to invade and take over Canada.

The US also has a breadbasket from around 40deg North and up. It would be interesting to see how much food we could produce if all those states could double crop the way California does now.

Not sure if we could get year round corn or soybean production, need an extreme increase of winter temperatures to get enough growing degree days for 2 growing seasons, almost have annual precipitation east of I-35 to double crop corn. Daylight hours in the winter may not allow for year round soybean production.

Might be able to row crop March-October, then a plant cool season crops like field peas or lettuce for the winter seasons. Or even have year round hay production.

I'll probably be long dead when the temps get that warm.

Yeah, water could be an issue. We do corn in the Summer and wheat in the Winter. Corn, of course, needs a ton of water, but the Winter wheat, most years we plant in October, do one round of irrigation (or none) and then maybe one round of irrigation in late May (or not) right before cutting depending on Winter rains.

Of course stuff like alfalfa could potentially get an extra cutting or two, which helps a little. Not food per se, but food for our food.  =D

But yes, we're likely talking hundreds of years.

No, the UN says it's all going to change very soon and we may already be too late to stop it.  Don't you believe them?

 =D

I laugh at that because the politicians have been telling us that sort of thing for a long time.  The actual reputable science never has (that wasn't pushing for more funding).

Yes, but by then it will be (again) dire predictions of the coming ice age.

Well, to be fair, climate change will be a thing in 2030 and in 203030, since the climate always changes. :)

So CA better start building some Nuclear powered desalinization plants pretty damn soon.   (They can't be fossil fuel powered.)

Get a good space program going, even a robotic one, so we can drop cometary ice on CA.  :-)

Much of the western soils if you over water them, they become infertile due to their high pH levels. Increasing irrigation will only speed up that process.

Though I think drainage and soil type are significant factors. On the West side of the San Joaquin Valley, there is a lot of salinization. Here on the East side, not much of any, all with similar crops. In fact if anything, we have more flood irrigation going on for row crops and such. Lotsa trees on the West side, with drip irrigation, yet still they have large areas of salt buildup even with more "sustainable" irrigation. Likely the water chemistry on that side had an affect as well - I think it's pretty high in TDS.
