political involvment of aps veterans
« on: October 29, 2010, 08:40:46 AM »
here's an article about returning vets and their views about getting involved in politics.  ranges from conservative, to liberal, to indifferent.

the article only gave three examples, so i was wondering what veterans on this sight are doing (or not) for this election.

Primarily talking with friends and relatives on the election, political insight and the importance of voting.

Oh yea, voting on Tuesday too.

i am always shocked at the amount of people that i run into who do not vote.  i'm guessing 50-70%?  even some of my opinionated friends have told me they don't think their vote will change anything.

If I start talking about politics with somebody, I will make it a point to ask him/her if he/she has voted.  If not, then conversation is over because obviously he/she doesn't care about the process.

^ Well, the trick there is to gently probe to see if their views might be a bit congruent to  yours.  Then encourage them to vote.  If not, disengage.

I've served as a precinct committeman, walked precincts, donated money & time to campaigns, put up yard signs (in my own and also others that have requested signs).  I currently work each election as an election judge.

I'm also pretty damn outspoken when it comes what I believe and the state of this nation.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

I do not speak to my liberal friends about voting. I want them to forget.

I'm the politics junky in the family.
I tell my wife and kids who to vote for and why and what state questions ot vote for or against and why.
My continued financial support is dependant on them voting correctly =D (or at least telling me they did).
I am also influential with several of my inlaws, my brother and sister.
When it comes down to it I have a very strong influence over about a dozen votes.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.
