Your local politics?
« on: November 05, 2008, 12:13:55 AM »
While the major focus is on Obama's win, the liberals won some battles at the local level as well.

In Milwaukee county, they passed a binding referendum raising the sales tax 1%. Supposedly this sales tax increase will lower property taxes but, as a longtime resident of this state, I know that no taxes will go down.

In the city of Milwaukee proper, a binding referendum passed requiring all employers to give their employees paid sick leave. Milwaukee has been losing businesses for years, so this is just another nail in the city's coffin.

I've been wondering: I'm the sole employee of my company; if I get sick, the company doesn't make money; who pays me?

Michigan passed a Medical Marijuana proposal and that shocked the hell out of me.

Not so much that it passed, but HOW it passed.  I live in a very (70%) conservative/Republican county (Ottawa) and when the polls closed at 9pm state-wide the Ottawa county polls had already been closed for an hour.  Well, at least mine had been.  Hence, the initial results had heavy participation from my county and very little from the rest of the state.  The liberal (big city) areas weren't reporting much at that time.

It was 66% for and 33% against at that point.  Shocked the hell out of me.

Obviously, that one's going to pass.

Massachusetts is now completely insane.

1. Repeal the income tax?  No 69% Yes 31%
2. Decriminalize marijuana?  Yes 65% No 35%

WHAT?!

Also:

Democrat Barney Frank 67% Republican Earl Sholley 26%

And, of course, NH re-elected the doe-eyed milquetoast liberal governor. I am so disgusted. It's just too much. Too much.

No disagreement there.  I simply cannot understand how something like that could get on the ballot and then be voted down.  Anybody from MA know how that happened?  Is it just mass stupidity or was there a good ad campaign?

Simple enough.

People with no jobs pay no income taxes, so they don't care.  In fact, they get welfare assistance from all you fools that work that still live in Michigan and pay income taxes.

I'm quite certain that I do not pay a MA state income tax as a resident of MI.

Oops.  Sorry.

I don't know where I got Michigan and Massachussetts mixed up.

I'll go flog myself, then my high school geography teacher for good measure. =D

In Kentucky, Mitch McConnell barely kept his seat in the senate.
The limerick, peculiar to English,
Is a verse form that's hard to extinguish,
Once congress, in session,
Decreed it's suppression,
But people got around it by writing the last line without any rhyme or meter.

Here in the middle of Ohio, just east of the island of liberalism known as Columbus, the republicans stayed strong.  I'm smiling today because my appointing judge won with 72% of the vote, despite a very nasty campaign against him.  He did not respond in kind, and kept his campaign free of negative attacks.  Even on the Presidential race, the results were 60/40 in favor of McCain.

On the marihuana issues, I've been saying for a few years now that marihuana will be decriminalized, then sold and taxed at high rates, in the next 10 years.  It's becoming too accepted in society, for better or worse.

Didn't CA just beg for money from FedGov? My taxpayer money?

Then how are they going to get the likely ten billion to pay for the (sing the monorail song!)...er..."high speed rail" they just voted for between SF and LA?

Well, it looks to me like we had a pathetic turnout - out of a population just about a million there were only about 400k votes for the presidential election.  Only about 300k voted to determine whether we get steel-on-steel rail, which will be a major impact on the island.  Yes, people want a rail system here on this tiny island where traffic is no where near as bad as, say, in Los Angeles.  All for want of more federal $$ and jobs for the local unions.  Most of the incumbents kept their seats, which means progressives like Abercrombie and Hirono in Congress.  Fortunately that also means my state-level rep. stays (he's a conservative Republican).

Shall the following amendment to the Constitution be adopted:

Summary: Changes the language that describes a person who cannot legally vote from “idiot or insane person” to “a person adjudged mentally incompetent to vote.”

Actually I'm pretty sure the polls close state-wide at 8pm. At least, they do in Macomb County, which is one of the larger ones.

Colorado had a measure to prohibit the state from either discriminating against or showing favoritism to people based on race, creed, color, and the rest of that.

As of about 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, all the votes haven't been counted; it appears, however, the measure may well be defeated. That's Denver for you.

A 3/8% tax to fund the construction of a light rail failed.  Good.  I'll pay for the the transportation that I use, thank-you-very-much.

Prop A passed - legislation which forces the maximum on can loose in a casino to $500 has been repealed.  Good.  People should be able to do what they please with their money, and have to live with the consequences of those choices.

And, this piece of crap passed:

Quote
Proposition C, the renewable energy plan, also passed 66 percent to 34 percent. The proposition mandates the use of renewable sources of energy with a goal of 15-percent renewable energy by 2021. Under this initiative, utility customers will pay a rate increase of up to one-percent per year.

Great...  The government is forcing me to fund energy choices that aren't the most economically viable.

Yup!  Voted for Cornyn.  I like the guy, was out in D.C. in May and met with him to lobby about a healthcare related bill.

Same here with my Rep., Burgess is back.  I really like him...

Here in MT the Dems won the Governor slot (incumbent), Senator (incumbent), Sec of state, Attorney General, State Auditor, and Chief Justice of Supreme Court.
The only thing the Republicans won was reelecting our U.S. Rep.

This is Montana! What the hell is going on? I am so disgusted right now.

Didn't vote for Cornyn.....he tows the party line over what's Constitutional (i.e. bailout, Patriot Act, etc) ....but I'm glad he was re-elected...

Also glad Barton & Hensarling were re-elected....at least we'll have some strong opposition to the Obama wave...

Also, seen on a local paper's comments:
Quote

Marie-
We also moved to NH from Mass but not so our view could be represented. We moved to NH because the quality of life is much better here than in Mass. NH is a great state and I believe it will continue to be. If you don't like NH anymore then I guess it's adios to you. Picking a state to live in because of it's republican or even democratic leanings is pretty stupid. What difference does it make? Are you going to find a state where you agree with everything they do and say? No. And if you think yes than you're living in Lala land.

I'm proud that I voted Obama and no one can take that away from me.
