HBO Series "John Adams"
« on: October 12, 2014, 09:31:16 PM »
I just finished watching it on Amazon Prime.  Pretty darned good.  Well worth your time, if you don't mind a policritter's view of the Revolutionary War and the first few administrations.

There was one horrifying scene.  No, not the tarring and feathering.  Paul Giamatti plays Adams and we get to see him in a sex scene.  HBO just had to have one in the miniseries.

I watched it (when it first aired), and found it to be very informative.

While disturbing it seemed somehow less out of place

I stopped watching because of the shakey handheld camera work.

We like to watch some portions of that around Independence Day. With all the Gadsden flags, you can tell they made it pre-2009.

I know. HBO  Plus the mastectomy. I don't really know how graphic that scene is, since I just don't watch it.

I stopped watching because of the shakey handheld camera work.

Local videographer did that because the director and producers wanted it and the Hollywierd folks could not get it "right".  I'll tell him you disapprove.

Every Independence Day a local station carries the movie "1776" which stars William Daniels as John Adams:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068156/

It's in musical format, but was very informative, entertaining, and highly amusing.  Howard de Silva was superb as Ben Franklin.

Some habitual naysayer claimed it was "inaccurate," but to me, it brought out very forcefully and clearly the principles on which they were acting, and to hell with strict historical accuracy.

There.  I said it and I ain't takin' it back.

Every time I pick up the paper and read about some current politician's shenanigans, I get nostalgic for the tar-and-feather scene from John Adams.

If you have an interest in historic drama, see if you can get a copy of April Morning. As far as I know it was only on TV once - it's based on the events of April 19, 1775, and the famous "Shot heard 'round the world" which touched off the American Revolution. Tommy Lee Jones stars.

Well said. I believe it's on Netflix, and also stars a young Heath Ledger.

You are correct it is available on Netflix streaming.

Adams is now on Netflix?

Wow! Gotta run!

CRAP! You're talking about April Morning. I've seen that. Good movie.

But, it's not Heath Ledger. It's Chad Lowe.

You won't be seeing most of HBO's shows on Netflix, since Amazon signed a huge deal with HBO.
