Netbooks, tiny laptops, etc
« on: January 12, 2009, 11:58:58 AM »
Anyone else have one of those tiny netbooks?
I picked up an Acer Aspire one a couple weeks ago.
1.6GHz Intel Atom, 1 GB ram, 8 GB SSD, 8 GB SD card for added storage, Windows XP.
So far, it's been very handy to have around.
The SSD reads quite slowly, so I decided to move all my apps to the SD card, and that has made a huge difference.

the hard drive isn't any better. It's quite sluggish. I've thought about embedding a fast flash drive and running the OS off of that, but I can't be bothered.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I liked my Aspire One until the hard drive failed. Missing it already. I'd probably still buy it if buying again because of the value. The Samsung is a lovely looking machine, but a tad expensive.
I do not like, when with me play, and I think that you also

I just got a Dell mini 9 netbook.  32 gb SSD running Ubuntu.  So far it's been plenty fast enough for my needs.  The keyboard took some getting used to.  They mucked about with the keyboard layout on the lower right-hand side, near the punctuation keys.  But I suppose that's what it takes to make a computer that's smaller than a typical hard-bound book.

I likes it.  I likes it very much.  :)

Eee 901A here. Nifty little box, has enough guts to play a DVD from an old USB DVD drive full-screen.

I'm having trouble getting the one thing I wanted working though (emulation), but that's not the netbook's fault, and certainly not it's fault that I want it to do things that the builders probably never intended :)

If these guys -really- want the things to take off, they'll include cell phone features. I'd LOVE a phone about the size of a paperback with a keyboard just barely large enough to touch type on.

MIL got an EEE901 for Christmas, but we could never get wireless to work.  Took it back and got an Aspire One, which has been awesome.

I've been looking at them myself. Lenovo makes them as well.  If they'd put one out with a trackpoint instead of a trackpad I'd buy it immediately.

I've got the Acer Aspire One as well.  Just got it about three weeks ago.  So far it's been awesome.  Don't care for the touchpad, but don't really care for any touchpad, so the button layout is not really a big deal to me.  I use a mouse anyways.  It's been plenty fast enough for me.  Startup is exceptionally quick compared to any other computer I've used.
