Hmmm.  Lessee now.

Several people around.

Homeowner shoots an intruder.

Intruder lies dead in the bathroom.

Cops enter, see person with a gun.

Cop shoots person with a gun.

Person with a gun is the homeowner.

It's Aurora, CO.

Anything I'm missing?

That is pretty much the only information in the article.  It would be nice to know a little more about what occurred and when and how fast.  Given some of the other shootings we have seen video from, the homeowner may have had 5 minutes to drop the gun or 1/2 a second.  We don't know.

From the comments of the article.

This really stinks. On the one hand, you are perfectly legal and within your right to own a gun and use it to defend your life and family. On the other hand, the cops are within their right to shoot any armed person they encounter when responding to a crime scene?! I guess you’re better off to solve it yourself and not call them until you’re absolutely certain the bad guys are dead and it’s time for mop up. By then you’ll have had time to put your gun away so the heroes don’t kill you when they come to “save you.”

The lesson boys and girls is this:
don't greet the responding officers with a gun in your hand.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

Doesn't the Aurora police have a history of shooting homeowners and other innocents kind of quickly in confrontational situations? I seem to recall them being in the news before over something very similar.

Yes, there have been a couple like that lately, without me digging around to enumerate them.  At least to me, and this is not just lately (since I've lived in the Denverish area for almost 50 years), Aurora always had a kind of shady rep.

I lived in Aurora in the early '70s. Didn't seem like a bad place then.
As kids we had no problems coming and going around town on our bicycles or on foot.
Didn't have any issues with break-ins in the neighborhood we lived in.

How is it a tragedy for the police?  They have immunity

Plus at least a couple will get a lengthy, paid vacation.

FOX news is reporting that this is the 2nd kill of the Summer for the cop.

Something begins to stink worse than initially reported.

A good bit of advice I got from an LEO.  Be on the phone with 911 as soon as you pick up your weapon.  Stay on 911 through the whole incident.  It will record the whole thing (good evidence) and  dispatch will keep you informed about the location of officers so you can disarm before they get to you.
