Any runners here?
« on: May 06, 2006, 05:01:04 AM »
Anybody here run on a regular basis?  I've been running pretty consistently for the past 2 months between 10-20 miles per week (lately, 15-20).  I've even added wrist weights to the mix to get added benefit from the whole effort.

The past 2 weeks, Ive had some hellacious pain in my right leg, specifically the back of my knee and shin.  I have a bit of minor pain in my left shin, but its not causing any grief, the right leg has me walking with a goofy limp.  I can't think of anything Ive changed to make this happen, I never run on pavement, just the hardpack on the side of the road, and I stretch religiously.

Anybody have advice on extra stretches or something to help this go away?  I really have no desire to go to the doc and get PT right this sec, and I'm going to basic in Jan, so I really can't afford to be laid up between now and then. Help?

Shin pain is likely shin splints, and the knee pain can be any number of things.  If you want a proper diagnosis, you need to go to a doctor.  I can't understand this notion, excepting money issues, of being allergic to seeing a doctor when you have genuine health concerns.  I've had knee problems after running, and went so far as see a sports medicine specialist.  3 xrays later, he said nothing was wrong, but that I needed to take a break ... for 2 months.  Chances are, you are going to be asked to dial down your activity temporarily and cross-train with some lower-impact activities.

Check your shoes!

I recently went through about 3 weeks of terror caused by bad shoes (New Balance).  I developed a tingling and numb sensations in my feet.  Web MD gave me 5 dozen reasons to panic.

I was putting myself through some real pain.  It seems I have developed ganglion cycts on the top of my feet where my new New Balance shoes hit my feet, across the ligament.  The cycts were creating the sensation.

Have always been a Nike man before buying these shoes.  Docs told me to stop wearing New Balance and to massage the cycts on my feet and see him in July.

Downward dog and forward bend are good stretches for your problem areas.

Asics running shoes have always treated me well.

You might consider getting aftermarket inserts for your running shoes  (not ultra-expensive custom orthotics, just generic gel inserts).  The ones that come with running shoes are thin foam garbage.

Stretch before and after you run, and try to run on grass and dirt when possible.  Concrete is evil.

Good shoes, ice it all the time, take Ibuprofin 3 times a day for a while to help with any possible swelling. Take a break for a little while while you do these things. Never stop icing, it always helps. That's what I've been told, I am on my squadron's runteam. It's treated me well so far. I think I had the same problem as you for a bit.

Oh, also try and make sure you are running with the proper form, too. I had a real heavy step.

I used to run. Couple of miles a day. Kept the weight down, etc... Wasn't a small guy, so, hey, it was a way to do it, and I just gutted it out.

Then I gorched a knee. And gained weight.

Two arthritic knees, an arthritic ankle (broke it on a run once...), and if you're into fitness, I suggest weight lifting or something without impact.

Another Asics man here.  I would definitely put those hand weights down, they can really throw off your gait and mess up your entire body.  Also, consider cross-training, maybe swimming or biking, and work on strength-training your legs.  I had terrible knee-pain that caused me to stop running for years (I used to run serious distance, 30+ miles a week).  Taking up karate and working on my overall leg strength, getting new running shoes, and keeping off the concrete have worked so far (I'm easing myself back into it).

Anybody here with background in the military (specificly USMC?)  I was wondering how much they run on 'crete...

Are shin spints something one can heal up from and get over?

How much concrete? Not so much running, but a hell of a lot hiking.

And yes, you can get over shin slints if you allow them to heal.

Yup. That's pretty much it. Keep the inflammation down - ibuprofen, or if your doc will do it, and you don't have a sulfa allergy, celebrex.

I was in the Army, and that was all we ever ran on.  Couldn't have run on more crete without going to that storied isle itself.  Then again, we never ran more than five miles at a time, and usually less.

I was at Fort Benning and Fort Hood for about three years, First Cav, Mechanized Infantry.
