*%$#*&^% Microsoft
« on: December 16, 2021, 09:32:45 PM »
I came home this evening to find that Windows updated itself again.

This time, in the process, it wiped out:
  • At least half my desktop icons (and rearranged the ones that are left)
  • My Thunderbird e-mail accounts
  • ALL my bookmarks and configurations for three different browsers (Waterfox, Firefox, and pale Moon)
  • Access to my external hard drive
  • Windows Classic Shell

I expect I'll be discovering more stuff that's been Borked for days to come. WTF is wrong with Microsoft? Why would they put out a supposedly routine update that's going to hose the customer's computers. It's going to take me hours and hours -- if not days and days -- to recover from this.

I agree.

Even though I supposedly blocked updates, they still sneak in under the tent flap and eff things up for my own good.

My biggest, but not my only, bitch is the way they now decided they can "guess" at what I wanted to highlight for copying or font-changing. Crap, they should have left it alone, where the highlighting starts where I started the cursor to where I ended with the cursor, and that was that.

But nooo, they "think" I want to highlight the whole sentence or the whole line, or including the period of a sentence, or the whole friggin' paragraph or whatever their newest dewy-cheeked development star thought would be best 'cause he or she likes to do it that way and you should too, you dumb boneheaded ignoramus.

Terry pants breathlessly after that one...,

i'm going to guess you're into a temporary user profile.

Right click the start button.  Click "run".  In the box, type "cmd" and click OK.

In the command prompt box that pops up, is the prompt "C:\Users\TEMP"?

Is this Windows 11? Because mine just asked me if I wanted it and when I said no, they were like "BUT YOU CAN CHANGE IT BACK IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!!"

I still said no.

No, it's Windows 10. I thought this might be the update to the second release of 2021, but the system reports that I'm still slogging along on release 21H1.

I'm on 11 and having no real issues... so far. Got it at the earliest offering.

I don't have anything that will even run Windows 11.

Correction -- my IT friend says my old Surface 3 should run it. Nothing else will.

I dumbly had microsoft Edge.  Windows 10.  I am and continue to be a willful Luddite.

About a week ago when I signed on to my laptop and clicked on the Edge icon, a full screen popped up asking if I wanted Micorosoft Edge for Children.  My screen was totally locked.  I was not able to do anything to get rid of it.  I did discover after a bit of frustration I could go back to the Edge icon and right click it and I was able to get a new tab that overlaid the locked one.  I tried turning off the machine and rebooting it a couple times but the Edge for Children screen popped up again or it didn't go away.

My son managed to, after a lot of wortk, load Chrome.   Then tried to uninstall Edge from my machine.  My Dell laptop will not allow Edge to be uninstalled!!!  Edge has also tried to kick Chrome off without me actually doing something, but somehow I managed to get around that.  I am debating now to go to Sam's and buy another cheap laptop and give this one the heave ho.

Win7
And for some reason siddenly there are icons on my startup list and I can't figure out how to get rid of them. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear they're getting in on the Microsoft Security Essentials updates for my own good.

Fortunately, I create a new Restore file almost every weekend.  I'll try that.
