Ten Creepiest Abandonded Cities
« on: October 08, 2012, 11:34:36 AM »
I don't necessarily agree withe the article's headline about "creepy". Bodie is actually really cool. The one in Turkey looks quite large. The one in Taiwan could make a good Zombie Apocalypse hangout. Namibia should be titled "The Sands of Time".

I think the island in Nagaski would make the pimpest post-apocolyptic hang out.

I was looking at that one too. :)

I was wondering how many natural resources there are on that island (fresh water, arable land, etc.) and how much stuff the Japanese were hauling in on barges.

Centralia shouldn't count. There are essentially no buildings.

Yeah, no kidding. "Creepy" would actually apply to some of the pics I've seen of abandoned parts of the city.

Creepy would actually apply to some of the places I've personally seen of the abandoned parts of the city.

I was there to watch a marathon before 2000. (Fortunately I wasn't too concerned about safety just after dawn on a Sunday morning.) It looked like the aftermath of a war.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

And of course Pripyat tops the list as expected. I hear the new enclosure is coming along. Giant arch structure that they will literally just roll over the top of the current sarcophagus of the Chernobyl #4 reactor. Be neat to tour that place (the city, not the sarcophagus, 300 Gr/h isn't my idea of fun.)

Just put your lunch in there. It'll still be fresh when you come back from touring the town.  =D

Sanzhi in Taiwan, the one Ben pictured, for some reason reminds me of Miranda from Serenity. That just creeps the *expletive deleted*it out of me.

It does have a certain 'cool factor', doesn't it?

It's also not abandoned. It still has residents.

One of these days I want to get out to Centralia Pa and check it out. Its only about 2 hours away. I think there are some abandoned sections of the PA turnpike out that way that are supposed to be interesting.
Any APS'ers been there?
Another item on my list is this viaduct that was actually close to where I grew up but never explored.

By no small coincidence, there needs to be a high-quality, decently-funded TV series based off of the Stalker universe.

This. The Stalker games would make for an awesome backdrop and plotline for a (well-done) series.

Absolutely! The current games and books are insufficient for my STALKER needs.

Y'all come on out to New Mexico sometime. The very low humidity preserves nearly everything.

Some speculated that the resort was built on a Dutch burial ground while others attributed the misfortunes to a dragon statue destroyed during construction.

I found that hysterically funny for some reason.  Here, it would be an Indian burial ground.  In Taiwan, the boogeyman that terrifies little Taiwanese children in the dark is The Dutch.

One of my favorite past times when living in AZ and UT was checking out ghost towns.

Funny.  My first thought was I hate apartment designs like that.  If you aren't in the one facing the water, the view sucks.  I would especially not like the one that face right in on another apartment.   =D
