Student says he probably can't finish his thesis because ISIS is holding his family hostage. His professor sends a team of mercenaries to extract him. I can't see any American professors or universities doing this.

In the USA, college administrators would be terminating him for his racist, anti-Moslem actions, and at least some politicians (Democrats, of course) would be agitating for his prosecution.

Well, if you have students from and research teams going to all parts of the world it starts making some sense.

CIA and NSA etc have had their tentacles in the Ivy League schools for a long time.
