Lewis Hamilton on Top Gear
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:45:29 PM »
For the Top Gear fans and the one definite motor racing fan on here - this link probably won't stay active for all that long - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgorvPimvx4 (some sort of adult themes in there as a warning for our resident youngster)

Essentially Hamilton went round the test track in their 'reasonably priced car' in the wet 1/10 of a second quicker than Jenson Button did it in the dry, 3/10's slower than The Stig did it in the dry and all whilst humming a merry tune.

Serious talent.

Uh... Yeah. I guess driving Formula 1 cars is an adult kinda thing, but I don't think that was what folks were talking about...

Neither did I. If you watch it, you'll note there are some jibes about puberty.

Impressive driving, I suppose.

But really, how much do you actually learn by putting a F1 driver in an economy car on a goofy airport racetrack?

I was actually looking for this last night.
Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

It all started with putting celebrities in the car and sending them around the track, then Damon Hill did it.

In that same episode the real learning experience was reserved for Richard Hammond who was put in an F1 car. After some time in formula Renault and briefings he got in the F1 car and initially was driving too slow to not crash because there was not enough heat in the tires or the brakes. He managed two laps, but apparently only used full throttle for 0.2 seconds.

It proves I wasn't too far off the mark a few years ago when I was autocrossing my daily driver... Daewoo Leganza, or the near-father vehicle to the one they're using on the show Smiley

Figure out your cornering limits, and put the foot to the floor, and listen to the gerbils scream!
