The .gov funded a study to examine the effect of a gay man's penis size on his sex life and general well-being.  Study was linked to a $899,769 grant in 2006.  They surveyed more than 1,000 gay and bisexual men at events in NYC for the gay community.  Tax payer money supposedly was not used in the collection of the data but in the writeup and analysis of said data.

I am so glad to see that the .gov is spending our tax money so wisely.  (We really need a sarcasm smiley.)

Link is useless: the article did not define 'below average', 'average' and 'above-average' penis size.  Since this correlated as to if I would be a top, bottom or 'versatile' in the gay community, I want to see how I stack up!

The grant sounds like an E-Harmony for gay academics, but then I'm a cynic.  It took $900,000 to write up this study?  Amazing.  That's a lot of monkeys at a lot of typewriters.  It's going to be tough for people in the social sciences to find remuneration in the future once the gov't grants begin to dry up, but they can't expect serious, hard-working people to subsidize their fun forever, can they?  Instead of a prolonged study they could have gotten the answers to this project in a couple of trips to any gay bar, methinks.

I already have materials, machines, and expertise. What I don't have is a business-zoned building or money for ITAR. The FFL is the cheap part, and it's none too cheap...

If not for those laws, just for the purpose of argument, I could walk into my garage right now and start making the prototypes for many, many items.

But a $900,000 study? I'm just not outraged. There are far, far larger wastes of money to be outraged over. This is a minor annoyance, in comparison to where big money is going.

It was a nice mellow day for me until you pointed that out.  $900K will buy a nice development shop, draftsman, patent lawyers...

True, one 900k grant isn't the problem.

But, it's still waste. There are better things to spend 900k on. Also, how many other pointless 900k expenses do we ring up every year? Going out to dinner with the wife doesn't bankrupt us either, going out every night? Different story.

Yes, indeed there are, but the fact that we've come to view pissing away a million bucks as nothing to get much annoyed by is indicative of the problem we have.  For every dubious million dollar grant that's reported there are a hundred or a thousand we know nothing about.
