Nothing makes me want to light up an unfiltered Marlboro Red like an anti-smoking PSA.

I am not a smoker.  I think smoking is a bad idea.  I also think it's filthy and disgusting.

But,:

1) It's a legal product that people have the right to purchase and use.

2) The government has no business regulating smoking on private property.

3) Making commercials that show anti-smoking activitsts harassing tobacco companies is both silly and ineffective.  It's not like the problem is that people are unaware of the dangers of smoking.

Oh God, go start this thread on THR and find out how many gunnies are closet banophiles, its a nighmare.

I hate those adds too, my favorite thing about them is that they are paid for with my hard earned tax dollars.

You know, my brother told me today (I think he saw this on the news somewhere) that the government wants to totally ban smoking in places like restaurants and bars (etc.) by the year 2010. I told him it ain't gonna happen. Anyone got any other info about this?

It's already happened in North Dakota, Florida, Lincoln NE, and a number of other states(My watchlist:ND, NE, FL).  Though apparently the Lincoln one is being fought against by bars and such.

The trick:  They aren't banning smoking in the room, they're banning smoking in rooms where employees have to work.  Nevermind if all the workers smoke themselves.  They HAVE to be protected!  It'd be an interesting argument if all the 'workers' were at least partial owners.  Most have exemptions for actual tobacco shops.

Personally, I'm a nonsmoker.  I will not patronize establishments that force me to be in the smoke.  However, we've known for a long time how to do neat tricks with air circulation, filters, and pressure variances.  One of the notable things in these bans is that they even close down 'smoking rooms' with these dedicated air handling facilities.  This is where I believe that it stops being a 'worker safety' issue and becomes a anti-smoking crusade issue.

Heck, I recently read an article how the 'smoke ban' has actually ended up worsening England's energy usage/kyoto compliance because bars and restraunts ended up placing patio heaters all over the place to cater to the smokers.  I'm sure you can realize how inefficient open air heating is.

Both MD and VA just recently rejected proposed legislation banning public smoking (at least in restaurants and bars).

Good.

Jersey just passed a restaurant/bar smoking ban that goes into effect April 15th.  Of course, the casinos in AC got an exclusion.  People here are not happy about that, at all.
Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

(puts extra heavy flame retardant suit on  shocked )

Having quit 20 + years of smoking 12 years ago all I can say is nothing bugs me more these days than the odor of stale cigarettes. I sit at the range and people come to my desk having just huffed a quick one down before coming in. All I want them to do is get out of my office so it will quit reeking in there. Then they want to hang out and talk.

They banned smoking indoors here in CT. All the bars now have little outdoor patios where the smokers go to shiver in the winter. There is one observation I have to make. Suddenly the bars smell better. It's REALLY STRANGE to sit in a bar where the air is sweet and clean.

You've never lived until you've had to take a bar air conditioner apart and clean all the tobacco tar out of it.

You do what you want but I'm here to tell you quitting smoking is the one best thing you can do for your health.

I don't think anybody would disagree with any of your statements, 280plus,  I just think its more the issue of excessive, heavy handed goverment regulation.

i have a new, subversive motive for supporting smoking though..... as of last week my company started carrying these air-cleaning/conditioning units (not the ionic breeze!),  and i feel the will be a hit in bars that also cater to the food side..  i'll dig up a link for anybody who wants one,  these machines are great.

Not really sure I want to go to any American bars now. I'd rather spend time with 'Gentle Ben' than most bar props.

The ban is on its way here. I have found that being a sufferer from a major chest disease, and being against the banning of smoking in public places, makes you both an object of curiosity and unpopular.
I do not like, when with me play, and I think that you also

See my note about advanced filtration systems.  The nice thing about building level units is that you get cheaper replaceable filters.

Understood but WE are the gov't. Supposedly anyhow. So if the majority of us decide that smoking is best done outside doesn't that obligate the losing minority to comply? If they don't like the law, their option is to gain the majority and change the law. I find it disheartening that, given all we know about the effects of smoking, that it TAKES a gov't mandate to protect those of us who chose not to smoke from ingesting someone else's second hand smoke. I would much rather see a majority of smokers who are responsible enough to accept this and be courteous with their smoking than to have to force them to do so. But that comes under the heading of "When pigs grow wings and fly."

I would love to see the majority of smokers quit so my medical insurance can go down.  In the meantime there is arm-twisting.

Maybe you should consider purchasing health insurance that is not made available to smokers, then they would have no impact whatsoever on your rates.

I started smoking just because of the truth ads.

Not really, I wanted to learn how to make smoke rings.

I don't smoke much anymore anyway, once in a great while on holidays.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.
