You know, my brother told me today (I think he saw this on the news somewhere) that the government wants to totally ban smoking in places like restaurants and bars (etc.) by the year 2010. I told him it ain't gonna happen. Anyone got any other info about this?
It's already happened in North Dakota, Florida, Lincoln NE, and a number of other states(My watchlist:ND, NE, FL). Though apparently the Lincoln one is being fought against by bars and such.
The trick: They aren't banning smoking in the room, they're banning smoking in rooms where employees have to work. Nevermind if all the workers smoke themselves. They HAVE to be protected! It'd be an interesting argument if all the 'workers' were at least partial owners. Most have exemptions for actual tobacco shops.
Personally, I'm a nonsmoker. I will not patronize establishments that force me to be in the smoke. However, we've known for a long time how to do neat tricks with air circulation, filters, and pressure variances. One of the notable things in these bans is that they even close down 'smoking rooms' with these dedicated air handling facilities. This is where I believe that it stops being a 'worker safety' issue and becomes a anti-smoking crusade issue.
Heck, I recently read an article how the 'smoke ban' has actually ended up worsening England's energy usage/kyoto compliance because bars and restraunts ended up placing patio heaters all over the place to cater to the smokers. I'm sure you can realize how inefficient open air heating is.
