Windows Update deleting DLL's?
« on: November 18, 2020, 08:58:22 PM »
My mom just texted me that after a Windows Update her games will not run anymore; there's a popup error message that Cmnclim.dll is missing.  My brother removed the updates, but of course that didn't bring the deleted files back.  Has anyone (Lee?) heard of anything like that?  I don't know what games she is talking about, but the computer used to be Windows 7 and they did an upgrade a year ago.  So probably old Windows 7 games. (solitaire, etc) and the dll was a carryover from Win 7.

I've been searching online for Cmnclim.dll and can't find anything about it at Microsoft.  I did find it at dlldownloader.com, and it /looks/ legit but I know that's risky.  I downloaded the file and scanned it with Windows Defender but still not sure if it's safe.  I would much rather find a download at microsoft.com

Would "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" in a Windows Powershell (admin) fix something like this?

Was the update the jump to release 20h2?

Yes, that dism command is worth a try.

I abhor Windows (7) updates.  Seems like every time they "fix" something, they screw up something else, maybe two things.  So then they fix those two things, which results in four more things being bollixed.

Seems that way anyhow.

Disabling windows updating seems to have worked most of the time, but they still have their sneaky dirty ways of getting in.

So what modern system will you recommend that's free of problems?

Point was that Windows 7 is not updated because it's from the past. :)

I understand that they're still dealing with XP and 7 'cause a lot of servers "out there" still run off those systems.  You don't need all the folderol (slide show eg)  capabilities to run a server, you just need an operating system sans consumer prettinesses.  I've been getting updates to Securiity Essentials for 7 but recently they warned they are no longer keeping Real TIme Protection going.  So I "restored" my system to a previous date where it was "on."

Just sayin'.

However, my objection to their "updates" or whatever you want to call them is still valid and I'm still getting them.

Win 7 is still being updated but you only get them if you're willing to pay a fee. Free updates is what was cut off.
