Best way to secure moving truck overnight?
« on: December 06, 2006, 02:58:43 PM »
What's the best way to secure a (full) moving truck overnight, in an apartment complex near Springfield, MA?

There's room to park either in the apartment lot or in the adjacent college parking lot, I've got a HUGE padlock, etc. What are some pointers in making sure my stuff doesn't get stolen?

Back your (or a friend's) truck or car up to the rental back bumper, almost touching.  Leave overnight.  Complicates breaking into & pilfereing the rental truck.

Hire someone to watch it. You've already done everything else you can.

If you can find a wall to back the truck up against that would work.

I should note that my car will be on a towing platform and hooked up to the truck.... there are no walls to back it up against, so I guess I'm just being paranoid.

You could always camp out in the back, with your SG of course. Is the sofa packed to far up in there?  grin

+1
If not available, use another vehicle.
Use a big ass lock on it.
If its a gas engine, disconnect the coil wire.

I missed that part....
Just make sure and unhook the coil wire if its a gas engine, and to have it locked.  Park it in a well lit area.

Hadn't thought of that - I'll keep that on my person as well. As long as it's in a well-lit lot (it will be) with the car locked/chained to the platform and a nice sturdy lock on the truck, it would be easier to break in to one of the apartments here, I think....

It would just majorly stink to have everything I own stolen.

Check and see if the Apartments have security, a phone call and some pizza might encourage them to keep an extra eye on your stuff.

Unfortunately, we don't have security. I checked.

Now we have to know.  Did everything make it through the night?

If its a diesel, no coil wire...if its a gasser, and its halfway recent, no coil wire either - (but you could find & pull the ignition or fuel pump fuse...)

Park the trailer at the end facing out and disconnect. Park in front of it and disassemble the ball hitch point from the trailer.  Immobilize the truck...

...or just park the whole thing where you can see it and hunker down for a long one;)

Well, it was fine last night. Just tonight, tomorrow night, etc. on through Sunday night at 11:30PM when we leave.    undecided

All I did was lock it well, leave the trailer hooked up, took the ignition coil wire, etc.
