This is a reductionist, one-dimensional perspective that hardly explains everything, but it does sum up broad tendencies:
Liberalism Is Expensive, Conservatism Is Cheap
As a glance at maps of Presidential elections results by county shows, modern American conservatism tends to flourish where land is abundant and thus inexpensive, while liberalism thrives where cities are thrust up against deep water, and thus suburban expansion is limited. Not surprisingly, the family values party does better where voters can afford to start families.

Costliness has numerous advantages. For example, liberal San Francisco has shoved out over half of its crime-prone black population since 1970, all without getting into tiresome discussions of why blacks don’t happen to live there anymore.
And that has proved a general pattern: the rich do pretty well under liberalism because capitalism has turned out to be far better than Woody Guthrie imagined at making what originally seems to be ruinously expensive affordable … at least for some.
Supposedly conservative types might want to take notes. Increasing the population density is increasing the leftism/redistributionism of government. That means more immigration means more intrusive gov't and socialist policies.
I would also add that more diversity also leads to more gov't as diversity erodes trust. Whereas in the past, one might talk directly to a neighbor about some nuisance, nowadays the nuisanced neighbor calls code enforcement on the nuisance-causing neighbor.
