HVAC Gurus: Filters
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:02:15 PM »
Howdy:

Just had a new HVAC system installed (furnace & AC).  The old system was 19 years young.  The outside AC was a Janitrol and the inside bit was a Carrier.  I had kept it together with duct tape and bailing wire, but parts availability bit me in the tuckus in the middle of a cold snap.  Anyways, replaced them with a low-end Trane setup.

The new furnace/blower unit sits on top a filter chamber doohickey with a flip-forward little door.  I was used to installing a single 14x25x1 filter, but this new chamber deal accommodates two of them, with little tracks for both or one 2" filter

My question is ought I supplement the pleated paper filter with a spun fiberglass filter just before it?  I thought it might help keep dog hair from getting into the A-coil and extend the life of the pricier pleated filter.  Cleaning the A-coil on tghe old unit was a bear.

I would suggest using a 2" pleated filter. You should be able to remove the tracks for the 1" if you have to. I haven't seen this new doohickey yet. Could you post some pics?

Also, you can buy filters of varying efficiency. You might try a higher efficiency (removes more dust/smaller "holes") if dog hair is a problem. They do tend to plug faster though. Check it monthly and replace as needed.
