One of said ridiculous caricatures. Though one of Niven's early, pre-hack works had an amusing premise. They invaded the human solar system, thinking humans had no weapons. Humans did have, however, the solar system's long-range communications system and solar-sail propulsion systems, which were massive solar-pumped x-ray lasers. I seem to recall the depiction of one of their warships just suddenly missing about half, with glowing edges and a fog of ionized metal vapor around it.

Reavers are only scary by writer fiat - they're somehow crazy enough to violently attack anything yet moves, yet smart enough to operate starships.

That's better than the lousy writing of endless hacks who put forward curiously single-minded races who seem absolutely unbeatable, and absolutely unable to adapt to a rather ridiculous deus ex machina "weak point" discovered in the last chapter.

I gotta go with Posleen too. Alien race-wise, he wrote a pretty good scenario, plus he at least semi-sticks to semi-plausible scenarios on how our military structure might work in fighting them off. Plus I want one of those reaver (not to be confused with Firefly) suits.

I have'nt read alot of sci-fi, but I would say the Yuuzhan Vong.

First, they slowly start to "Vongform" your planet seeding it with creatures which destroy local habitats and remake the planet with their crazy flora and fauna.

Next they come in their starships with overwhelming firepower.

Then, they invade the planet by ground, slicing your armies bits in their almost indestructible armor.

After that they destroy all native technology and enslave everybody.

Finally, by the time Vongforming is complete, the palnet is totally reshapen and the locals are mere chattel.

Yeah, that would really suck.

I'd prefer the Kzer-za, myself as far as the Ur-quan go, but yea, the Mycon are pretty much those that can One Shot Stop an entire planetary population.
