Nope, it turns by controlling the speeds of the two rotors. They move in opposite directions IIRC.

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

As cromlech says, the rotors turn in opposite directions thus cancelling out the torque effect that single rotor copters have.

Makes them even uglier, but very cool. Plenty of cheap controllable RC heli's around now that use that principle.

Counter-rotating rotors. Heavy armor. Two tons of armaments.

Also the only helicopter in service with a vertical ejection system for the pilot. It fires the pilot through the rotors, timed to avoid the blades somehow.

The best part? It's single-pilot. No gunner. The Russians have done some research and apparently the Kamov people claim that single-pilot helis are better at ground-attack than two-man helis.

Finally, did I mention it's the most heavily-armed helicopter in the world?

I think it's interesting that they show a Kmax sitting on the deck of a ship. The Navy decided the tilted rotors came too close to the deck during operation and rejected the concept. Last I heard Kaman wasn't making helos anymore but the website seems to indicate otherwise.

Hey guys and gals, can we get back on topic? This thread was interesting until we started talking about aircraft.

I watched one of these lifting logs a few months ago. I wondered who made it.

Actually, IIRC, the rotors are jettisoned prior to the seat ejecting.

According to wiki,
Quote
Before the rocket in the ejection seat kicks in, rotor blades are blown away by explosive charges in the rotor disc and the canopy is similarly jettisoned.

I used to do a bunch of A/C maintenance on a rooftop very near the plant where they test them. They were always flying around there. They have a very distinctive sound to them. We call them "Double Whoppers".
