SpaceX Set Back

Testing prior to a scheduled launch on Saturday to place an Israeli satellite into orbit.

Going to be interesting to see what happened.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Reminds me of a video I saw once, NASA launch, rocket blew up just off the pad....   Lady is in the middle of announcing "Liftoff, we have liftoff of blahblahblahblahblah"  and then kaboom.....  Then in the same calm voice she begins to say "We have had an anomaly....."  while it's literally raining fire.

To be fair, raining fire is anomalous.

In a statement, the company blamed the blast on "an anomaly" and said no-one had been injured.

Gee, that's informative.  As opposed to a routine explosion totally destroying a rocket and payload.

Radar imagery shows a small cell passing over just before the smoke plume starts.  Wonder if it could have been lightning related.

To be fair, they haven't had time to do the investigation to really figure out what happened, much less run it through engineer to human translators to get an explanation of the cause normal people can understand as opposed to rocket scientists.

Big rocket go boom. Much bad.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

"Normal" people are either not going to care or assume it's a conspiracy anyway.

Interesting, the explosion started on the 2nd stage, or at the couplings for fuel/LOX/pressurization with the gantry. That's not to say other problems or events could be the root cause, but it certainly didn't LOOK like it started with the Falcon 9 first stage.

(I'm unclear if it was their first attempt at re-use of a landed stage or not...)

I believe they've already re-used a landed stage, but have not yet done commercial lifting with one.

And, looking around: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-spacex-explosion-live-spacex-explosion-did-not-involve-a-1472743403-htmlstory.html

Not a reused rocket.

Anyone else notice how the pylons on top of the lighting protection towers started smoking from the thermal pulse of the explosion despite how no flames or blast touched them?

Damn.

I wonder how far away you could have been and still felt some heat on your face from that.

And I learned a new industry term. "RUD" for Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.

Not really related to the incident at hand... but I heard another new term, a bit more black humor, for when a spacecraft or rocket crashes into the surface of a planet. "Lithobraking".  =D
I promise not to duck.

So, what sort of alien/conspiracy rumors do we want to start?

First thought; the "lightning protection towers" were really part of a secret military weapon designed to destroy rockets, and this was the first close-range test.  The "satellite" payload didn't really exist, but is just part of the cover story they paid off Facebook to go along with.  At some point in the next couple of years, another factory second rocket will explode well away from the pad as the military tests the more practical long range version of the weapon.

About 3 1/2 seconds to go from rocket to little bits of metal waiting for gravity to finish with them.

That's got to be fun to explain to the insurance company.
