Yeah, I know it's Rachel Ray, a Hollywierd who probably supports That Cause. That, or some wardrobe person put it on her, and she's clueless.

But I'd expect a major corporation to know better. I guess it's okay because none of their outlets have been blown up by suicide bombers yet, only other franchise chains like Sbarro.

Looks like a ratty scarf thingy.  Scarves on women go in and out of style. I don't think its a kaffiyeh.

Yeah, that's true. It could be just a scarf. undecided  It certainly resembles one, so they ought to clarify or something. It wasn't me that thought so first, either, not like I saw a banner ad and jumped. Michelle Malkin mentioned it first, and I saw it on a whole line of Diggs and newsblogs.

http://michellemalkin.com/2008/05/23/of-donuts-and-dumb-celebrities/

Still a poorly thought-out wardrobe choice in the resemblance, I think.

I just get touchy because I've seen actual definitive PLO kaffiyehs for sale in Urban Outfitters in Boston, and that just really bothered me. It's a symbolic thing worn by some cruel and ruthless people, not a fashion item.

Yeah, at this point in history, I think it has moved beyond "kaffiyeh" and is just another women's scarf.

But I'm not convinced that's even the same style as a "kaffiyeh".  It looks a bit different.

How many in Hollywood:

1.  know what it is,
2.  can point to the Middle East, let alone the Gaza or the West Bank, on a map?

1 or 2 maybe?

Because with the black and white pattern, it's literally a symbol of Hamas, PLO, etc, and all the violence that they do.

You ought to know what the clothing you choose to wear stands for before wearing it. Same as the idiots who wear the Che shirts, but this is even more offensive, as it stands for people who are currently blowing up innocent civilians, women and children, and who celebrate when they do.

The aforementioned Urban Outfitters was also apparently just selling this shirt, so they definitely know what it is.

Sometimes though it is not what you wear but when and how.

Yeah! Have you noticed how many school shooters were wearing jeans?

Coincidence? I don't think so....

I'm not offended. Maybe I'm too lazy to protest a terrorist organization wearing a centuries old article of clothing worn by several centuries old cultures.

I wear one too. Mine is OD green in support of our troops. I think everyone should have one as part of their summer gear. They're really great.

That's not to say a lot of people wear them for the wrong reasons. They do. A lot of them aren't even aware that they might be offending someone. A lot of them wear one for that very purpose. A lot of them know someone might be offended but don't care because offending someone isn't their MO.

As to the picture of Rachel Ray, I don't think it's a kheffiyeh. Maybe a designer kheffiyeh. It looks obvious that it was partially influenced by kheffiyeh designs though.

My kaffiyeh is black and white, but it happens to have Tibetan prayers on it.  smiley

I feel sorry if anyone gets offended by it, but there's this wonderful amendment that allows me to express myself freely.....  grin

I don't care what she wears, I'm just tired of seeing her face everywhere I go.  It's like a song they overplay on the radio. At first you like it but hear it enough times and you get sick of it. Think "Stairway to Heaven"  laugh

It's also worn by Beduins who are seriously pro-ISrael, Palestinians who have nothing to do with the PLO, and the British SAS.

I didn't think kaffiyehs had fringe on them. I thought they were just a tablecloth...

Wearing a B&W patterned kaffiyehs in the West is the equivalent of wearing one of these puppies:

That is, none at all.

Hey, that was a great Sbarros.  Much better than the mall ones around here.  Also the first big chain restaurant I ever ate in, back in my kosher days.  It was a thrill, as was a kosher KFC around the corner.

Also, the woman who taught my nursery school class was in it when it was blown up.  She was in her seventies at the time, on a vacation from teaching nursery school, which she was still doing.  She wasn't very badly hurt, just lots of cuts and bruises and the memory of wading through knee high piles of broken glass and body parts.

Sorry, that second picture always brings up some memories, good and bad.

On the Kaffiyeh?  Yeh.  There's some definite symbolism. Glad they pulled it.

Theres a world of difference between a black and white scarf thing that vaguely resembles an article of clothing worn by some terrorists, and a Nazi swastika arm band.  People are looking for things to be mad/offended about.

I doubt that Rachael Ray is considered a pinup girl by Osama or any of the Taliban....esp. considering how much pork she uses in her cooking.....

...besides, most Hollywood types don't dress themselves.....

Does Dunkin' Donuts still make donuts?....
