Grammer Nitzies needed

The act of beating on a person unmercifully has come up.  But the discussion has bogged down over what that act is called.

Extra bonus appreciation given if you explain why your choice is the right one and everything else is wrong.

I'm actually a Grammar Jihadist, but "wale" (to raise welts on) seems most correct. I guessed "wail," on the poll. Some dictionaries online say it's "whale."

Whale is a marine mammal and not sure that wale is correct for anything.

I knew it was whaling; I have read this many times over the years in novels.  The dictionary and thesaurus agrees with me:

There's a verb definition, if you scroll down. "Whale" is probably a misspelling that entered common usage. Just a guess.

That depends on what a "Nitzie" is.

My instinctive answer may not be correct so I'm not going to chime in specifically.

However, I wholeheartedly endorse the notion that we should rein in the linguistic pandemonium, rather than letting linguistic pandemonium reign, thereby giving it free rein.

It could be that flannel thing your grammer wore to bed - but it's not.

"Wales" are the bumps in corduroy fabric. It can also be raised wounds or the horizontal pieces of wood that tie bollards together in a dock structure. A "whale" is a marine mammal, as has been noted. A "wail" is a loud cry. We seem to be forgetting "weal" which is most commonly used to refer to a wound, a welt.

Actually  weal meant good health or welfare.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought
