I think I have read some articles about NASA doing some interesting work in this area.  Primarily from the standpoint of reclaiming materials and nutrients for long-duration spaceflight.

Haven't folks been evaporating/distilling pee for the phosphates ever since gunpowder was invented?  Oh, wait!  that's nitrates, right?
