How much you have to earn to be middle class: by state

A limitation of these studies is they look at a state as a whole, rather than by metro regions.  The costs of living in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue-Everett area, and salaries thereto, far exceed costs and salaries in Yakima, for example.

That.
Before divorce, the household income was way above the upper limit 'middle class' for my state, but we were maybe middle of the road where we lived. Where I'm at now, I'm way at the poor end of the scale, but my household income is well above median for my state.

Well, crap, I'm out.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Yep, the town I live in $52.5K doesn't go very far, same with the other metro/big town areas in Iowa, but you get 60 miles away from the big town, you can live like a king on $52k.
Iowa- 88% more livable that the rest of the US

Same here. $52K pays the bills and leaves a whole lot for discretionary spending. If need be, I can get by on $24K.
