Mostly a Southron tradition - the gender of the first foot across your threshold on New Year's Day determines your luck for the year.

Goes along with serving the first foot either Hoppin' John or buckshot.

When I lived in Fredericksburg the men & boys of the neighborhood all got together and worked out assignments for First Footing.  I was the new YamDankee ComeHere (apparently who my mother was before she got married was not on the approved list as well as having recently moved from Manassas) so was not aware that setting the sachedule was the primary reason for the gathering around the fire barrel before the new Year's Eve block party got started.  Also, being the YamDankee I got the two houses at the far end of the neighborhood.
