THE ELITE ARE STORING NON-HYBRID SEEDS AT SECRET VAULTS IN THE ARCTIC CIRCLE!  NON-HYBRID SEEDS!!

http://survivalseedbank.com/

It's too bad I'm morally opposed to the exploitation of innocent vegetables.  Guess it'll be a pretty lean apocalypse for me.   =(

This has got to be the most awesome and LOLful scheme to sell humble seeds that I have ever seen.

That's because when we kill all the pirates and are 100% globularly warmed, the elites will live in the Arctic Circle.  It's the only place they will still be able to ski AND snorkle AND get ice for their drinks as they watch the rest of us drown in the rising water or broil in the sun.

I love how these doomsday vaults are for global peril... but they are locked!  Pictures I've seen are of some pretty damned stout doors, too.

And they are. It makes perfect sense. If natural disaster strikes our genetically-modified crops, you want to have a backup of natural seeds to start back to, no?

Which is what their marketing is based on - see, the people who are planning for disasters are storing non-hybrid seeds, so should you.

Nothing wrong with seeds.  The hype is a little overbearing, though.

True, but the article didn't say where in the Arctic circle the seeds are.  They could be buried in ice.

Are they tasty?  Cause now my plan for post-Apocalypse is to go North (well mostly sideways) and find the vault.

I'll have tons of tasty, tasty seeds to eat until they run out.

Mmmmm, seeds.

Big chunk of ice? Uhhhh........... Not the last time I was at the Arctic Circle which was this past September. It's all taiga forest there and pretty warm in the summer.

Right.

The arctic circle is a very large area, but it is not a continent. There is some land in the AC and a whole lot of ice. Since the article didnt mention where the seeds are stored, there is a better than even chance that the seeds could be stored in ice.  Not likely though, as I think the seed storing experts probably thought about that.

Whew!  Was that so hard to understand?  ;)

Arctic circle?  Big chunk of ice, right?  What happens to the seeds when the ice melts?

The History Channel did a show on the Svalbard Global Seed Vault located on Spitsbergen island.  It is built into the side of a permafrost mountain.  It has refrigeration units powered by the local coal that is mined on the island.  The refrigeration units cool the seed vaults to zero degrees F.  If the refrigeration units fail, it will take several weeks for the vault to reach the temperature of the surrounding permafrost, 30 degrees F.

The other interesting thing is that it was built 430 feet above sea level.  This figure was designed to be above sea level even in the event of climate change causing a massive melt off of the sea ice.
