Is this number six or seven?  I've lost count.

I think this is #5. In fairness, I think the franchise has held up better than most. I've enjoyed all of them, with #2 the weakest link IMO.

I remember the first one (with Alan Rickman as the bad guy), the one with the airport takeover, and the one where the bad guy sets a bomb in a NYC school as a ruse to hide the theft of the gold in the Fed Reserve bank.

That would make this #4, or was there one (or more) that I missed?

#2 is my wife's favorite. She was really hoping for a Fred Thompson presidency.

sumpnz, #4 was Live Free Or Die Hard. It was Lethal-Weapon-level silly, but still fairly watchable.

There are currently 4 so this one would make 5.

In this land of DVR skipped commercials, I saw about 1/2 a second of Bruce Willis' face and a hint of the melody to "Ode to Joy."  That's a franchise that I love enough to rewind a commercial and find its beginning.

I lurvs me some Die Hard.  They're just great fun movies.

Great thing about 'em is they know they are silly, mindless, blow-stuff-up fun and they don't mind poking a little fun at themselves in a wink-to-the-audience way.  Yep, I'll be watching it.

I've only seen the first two.  I keep meaning to watch the rest.  I trust #3+ are better than #2?

Yeah, but can you get measure four gallons using one five-gallon and one three-gallon container?

5-3=2
3-2=1
5-1=4

Won't work.  It fails in step two.  You don't have a two gallon container to measure with.  Only three and five.

Fill 3.
Pour 3 into 5.
Fill 3.
Pour 2/3 of 3 into 5, filling it and leaving 1 in 3.
Empty 5.
Pour 1/3 of 3 into 5.
Refill 3.
Pour 3 into 5.

You have 4.

Or:

Fill 5.
Pour 3/5 of 5 into 3.
Empty 3.
Pour 2/5 of 5 into 3.  You now have 2/3 of 3 filled.
Fill 5.
Fill 3 from 5 (3 had 2 gallons in it).  That leaves 4 in 5.

But how many went to St. Ives?

Anyway, the first movie is still the best.  ;)

It also has the best foreshadowing I've ever seen:

Can't use subjective measurements (i.e. 1/3 of something or 2/3 of something)

It's not subjective.

Read it again.  It's fill-to-the-brim operations of one jug against the other, accepting as truth that one is 5 gallons to its upper limit, and the other is 3 gallons to its upper limit.

Either one should work just fine - it's a hard limit of the containers involved, not a "That's about 2/3..." judgement.

They both DO rely on your not spilling any while transferring from one container to the other.

Ok.  I will translate.

5-3=2 -> Fill the 5-gallon container and use it to fill the 3-gallon container, leaving 2 in the 5-gallon container
3-2=1 -> Pour the 2 gallons from step one into the newly-emptied three gallon-container, leaving 1 gallon of space at the top
5-1=4 -> Refill the 5-gallon container and use it to fill the 3-gallon container.  This step requires 1 gallon to be removed from the 5-gallon container, leaving 4

The ad looked impressive on IMAX screen.  My lady friend made sarcastic comments referring to my time in that part of the world. Wimmin are a disrespectful lot.  Looked entertaining.

"Rev, your picture is in my King James Bible, where Paul talks about "inventors of evil."  Yes, I know you'll take that as a compliment."  - Fistful, possibly highest compliment I've ever received.

Good no doubt, but my favorite foreshadowing was this, right at about 0:50 in the clip:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47DfQcHMYLY

That's the way I understood the process to work. The one thing I didn't see in the movie was any sort of marking on the jugs that would show an exact level. No ring or hash mark on the neck or such.

Yeah, but don't forget that Gruber the younger had no intention of setting off an explosive device in Central Park, just as the device in the school was an elaborate ruse.  One could argue that it never mattered what McClane and Zeus put on the scale anyway, it was just Gruber screwing with them again.
