Anyone have experience with the Epson ET 3750 printer
« on: October 11, 2018, 11:59:23 PM »
My HP all-in-crap bit the bucket (actually killed by cheap ink, but that's another rant) and I've been eyeballing the Epson tank based printers...   Costco has the ET-3750 on sale for 279.99 through the end of the month, and reviews are mostly positive, but I figured I'd check with folks on here to see if anyone has first-hand experience with that printer.

No recent experience with Epson ink jets, but after what I've seen with HP DeskJets (my wife's and two at the range), I'll never buy another HP ink jet printer. Anything must be better.

I got a Brother  laser printer.  I would never go to a ink jet printer again.

I'm actively trying to switch all of my clients to laser. If they print a ton of stuff, then the cost per page being about 10% of what ink costs makes a pretty big difference over time. If they don't print very often, toner doesn't dry out. You can get a decent color, multi function laser for under $300 these days. Unless you just need a cheap printer, there aren't many things to recommend an ink jet over a laser.

The last Epson I dealt with was a massive pain in the ass. The ink cartridges never lasted very long, even the XL ones, they cost an arm and a leg, the damn thing would refuse to print if even a single cartridge went low, and it was constantly needing head cleanings or realigning to keep the print quality from sucking.

Replaced it with a Brother MFC-J985DW, which has been the complete opposite.

Never dealt with one of the tank-based ones, though.

I agree. When my late wife's OfficeJet Pro died, I had just spent almost a hundred bucks to replace all four ink cartridges, only to find that the print heads were shot. Replacement print heads were available, but would have been prohibitively expensive. I looked around and found a Canon color laser multifunction printer/scanner/fax on sale at Staples for not much more than the HP print heads would have cost, so I jumped on it. Ink jet printers are commodities -- the printers are throwaways, the companies make their money selling ink. Laser toner basically never goes bad. I have a Sharp multifunction (printer/scanner, no fax) machine sitting in a corner that's probably 30 years old. It's old enough that there are no drivers for it under Windows 7 or Windows 10 -- I keep my old XP notebook printer around because that can still print to it. I took the cover off it recently after not having used it for twenty years, and it fired right up. It has some problems feeding paper because the rollers are dry, but the toner is good and it prints well when I can get it to feed.

Definitely go laser if that's an option.

I bought a Canon laser printer/fax/scanner/copier a couple of years ago.

I print very little and have virtually no need of color. I was printing so little that the ink tanks were actually going dry on my ink jets.

That's not been a problem with the laser.

That's where the ink jet vendors have you by the short hairs. Once you buy an ink jet, you HAVE TO print, or the machine dries up and you either buy new printheads, or buy a new machine. Older HPs incorporated the printhead in the cartridge, so a new cartridge brought a new printehead. The new ones use separate ink reservoirs and separate printheads. That's what killed my wife's OfficeJet Pro. She rarely printed, and I use a LaserJet for 95% of my printing so I didn't use hers enough to keep the printheads clear and functioning. The machine didn't wear out -- it just clogged up to a degree that the built-in self-clean function couldn't make a dent in it.

No more.

Another vote for going laser. I switched to a Brother MFC-9340CDW a couple of years ago. I should have done so a couple of years before that. I've had to print a TON of stuff over the last couple of years, and I just this week got the warning on low toner for the first standard black cartridge I bought (it comes with low volume "starter" toner, as do most lasers) and I probably still have six months left on the color toner.

About the only downside to laser, at least consumer laser, is photo printing. I have a Canon Pro-100 that I use for that, but a cheaper option is going to Walmart or wherever.

Anyway, the higher initial outlay on a laser (which isn't that big of a delta anymore) more than pays for itself in a year or two.

You can get extremely competent laser printers for well under $100 these days.

Well,  I was counting total initial outlay, which with "starter toner" means either one or four standard cartridges (depending on mono or color printer) very soon after you buy the printer.

Same - color laser MFP.  Super reliable.  Scanning works quite well.

One more vote for a low end HP laser, vs. ink jet all in one.  Print photos at the StuffMart photo machine.

Mine is a black and white printer.  On the rare occasions I need something in color, I go to the nearby Fedex Office and run them off.

My printer is 3-4 years old, and I'm only my second toner cartridge.  I go a deal on a 3 pack on amazon.  They won't go bad or dry out as they sit.

Definitely laser. A little more up front, a LOT less in the long run. This is ekspeshully true with MFP units that traditionally have hideously high ink replacement costs (and, as several have stated, adamantly refuse to print at all when even one of the colors runs out). One or two sets of dried up ink cartridges will pay for a big chunk of a medium-duty home/office color laser printer.

I wouldn't take a free HP Inkjet printer. However, their laser products are still a solid choice once you get out of the bargain-basement entry level stuff. Brother seems to be getting quite the good rep for cost-conscious home/office buyers. Dell, of all people, have a couple of units that keep popping up on Top Ten review lists.

Ok, anyone have experience with these two Canon lasers?

Mine is an MF628Cdw ... very similar, probably one generation older. It's an excellent machine. I will say that I find the scanning software for my HP LaserJet  1536 dnf MFP to be easier to use, but I guess if I used the Canon more for scanning I'd learn to use it with less hassle. Other than that ... no complaints at all. I think I've had it about two years (might be longer).

Yeah, I'm going to check the footprint of the space I have for the printer and probably going to pull the trigger on one of those laser units....   Seeing the price point is comparable to the Epson inkjet I was looking at, I almost can't not get it.

There is always this as a possibility with replacing toner cartridges.

My starter cartridges for my laserpro 200 lasted me over 4 years, just replaced the black a couple weeks ago.

So I pulled the trigger on the Canon MF634Cdw.  Picked it up from Office Max tonight (same price as Amazon).  Getting it set up now.   Comes with a standard black toner cartridge (rated for 1400 pages) and starter color cartridges (rated at 640 pages each), which I thought was pretty nice.  At $245, I really can't balk too much, and now it's just a matter of watching for toner to go on sale... :)
