I've been charged by more than my fair share of angry dogs, and stalked by one pack of coyotes.

I've found the best defense against them (if it's dark enough) is a bright, bright flashlight.

What about an air horn? And since this is APS, I'll throw out det cord and e-tools.

OK, why not an e-tool? Stick? Club? Nunchaku?

Another time while jogging with my brother, a dog charged and was mid-leap, about 20" away from a mouthful of my brother's behind.

Brother had a small piece of bamboo (1" diameter) that splintered when it hit the dog's side, causing it to run off yelping.

I have been bitten, on the ass, by a dog.  I now carry when I bike.  Next dog that shows ill intent gets lead poisioning.

Hell...isn't fending off predators what they were bred to do?  I wouldn't worry about it either.  Coyotes in Ohio are not hurting for easier meals.

FWIW:  We live in the county, couple miles from the nearest town, but are surrounded by 5 acre lots.  Most everyone around here has dog, cats, and the assorted livestock running around.  And coyotes.

I've seen them eating deer feed in my backyard at 1500hrs.  (Stopped the feeding after seeing them).  They've actually bumped against the house at around 2200hrs.  Seen them crossing different roads on different days around 0900hrs.   Scat in numerous places around the yard.

When the 5 month old Aussie shepard goes out, I do too.  Usually with a .357, occasionally the .38.

What you choose is up to you, obviously.  If a .380 works, it works; and it does.  There's no need to carry a cannon if something else will do the job.

Yikes! I'd feel a tad undergunned with a .380, but those are just my nerves, heheh.
You're right, I think.

Thankfully, these days, I go running with a pack of my own. 3 big German shepherds and 1 giant mexican ain't nothing for a little coyote to yelp at.

Probably should have posted something to backup the .380 claim:

No, yeah, I know about that.  Even had one of the gunshop goons try to sell me one of those "Texas edition" LCPs for $800. :)

It can get the job done just fine.  That ain't gonna stop me from being nervous about using a mousegun. :D

Perry didn't kill the coyote.
