Which is more annoying?
« on: February 20, 2015, 06:05:58 PM »
After several years hanging around various Internet forums, I've noticed that there are often two types of response when someone asks a serious and specific question:

1) Nobody knows the answer, so nobody responds. The original poster gets antsy after a few hours and starts posting repetitive "Nobody?" follow-ups.

Or ...

2) Other forum members may or may not know the answer, but nobody actually answers the question. Instead, numerous people respond with vaguely (or completely) unrelated posts about what they would do or what they have done. [Sort of like: Q. Where can I buy licorice in Memphis? A. I don't care for licorice myself, chocolate is better. Or, A. I like to disolve licorice in hot water, it makes a great alternative to herbal tea. Or, A. _____ ]

I find both to be annoying if I'm just reading the thread, but if I'm asking the question and I get eleventy gazillion responses not ONE of which actually answers the question, I find that to be far more annoying than people who don't know simply admitting they don't know by not posting.

I had a friend of mine pass away last week from cancer.
One of his daughters called me out of the blue today. A couple years ago they had come over to the house and we spent a few hours down on the range. She had really like my RIA Compact. Today she was asking if I knew where she might be able to find one for sale locally that wouldn't be from a dealer. Her being a current resident of Illinois I advised her that it was illegal to purchase a handgun out of state.

She had the gall to complain about Oklahoma gun laws until I pointed out that it was a federal law.

Perhaps she can find a nice Colt or S&W revolver made before 1899.

Nobody?
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

BTW Tam posted this on Book o' Faces today:

Seriously, folks!  The OP asked a fair and reasonable question and deserves a fair and reasonable response.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

I can understand nobody replying if nobody knows the answer.

As for the second phenomenon, I think people are waiting to say something in particular, and when a topic even remotely related pops up, they see it as a chance. Others just like to post.

My mother was an example of both. Talked all the time. If you said something, she would find a way to steer the conversation back to her. For example, if you said you broke your leg, she'd say, "yeah, you know, my ankle has been really sore lately". Not really a criticism of her, it's just the way she was, and I think there's a bit of that in all of us.

The single actions from Ruger I've shot weren't to bad for production guns.

Notice how well Fisty plays the part of the forum member who doesn't know the answer and so posts no response at all.
