Had Toni Vernelli gone ahead with her pregnancy ten years ago, she would know at first hand what it is like to cradle her own baby, to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel a little hand slipping into hers - and a voice calling her Mummy.

But the very thought makes her shudder with horror.

Because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief she was helping to save the planet.

Incredibly, so determined was she that the terrible "mistake" of pregnancy should never happen again, that she begged the doctor who performed the abortion to sterilise her at the same time.

At the age of 27 this young woman at the height of her reproductive years was sterilised to "protect the planet".

It couldn't have happened to a better candidate.  I am reminded of James Taranto's idea of the "Roe Effect," where liberals become fewer relative to conservatives over time becasue so many potential liberals get aborted.

Truly, it is stuff like this that makes environmentalism look like a substitute for religion.

Just to be clear, I am referring to the sterilization, not the abortion.  I suspect the sterilization prevented more abortions in enviro-nutter's future.

By the way, regarding that English lady who sterilized herself to save the planet, I wouldn't mind betting that voluntary, environmentally responsible, civilizational self-extinction catches on big time as the logical end-point of western progressivism. Even a smart guy like Lord May, (one of Australia's most eminent scientists, former advisor to the British Government, etc), finds the fall in global fertility encouraging without appreciating that this trend is not evenly distributed, and that it's precisely those groups that profess to care most about the environment - Western Europeans, Canadians, Vermonters, San Franciscans - that are self-liquidating the fastest. If you've ever seen the trash in small Yemeni villages or even in Bedouin encampments, the environment doesn't seem to be a big priority. But they'll be the ones left to man the Greenpeace offices.

There are too many Al Gore types who say one thing, "Global Warming Climate Change!! Stop burning fossil fuel," but do something diametrically opposite, "I live in a giant mansion that uses more fossil fuel in a month than your house does in a year.  And I fly on private jets."

I can't stand the hypocrits.  At least this lady has the guts to do what she is telling others to do.

Obviously, the reporter played up the "wacko nutjob" angle.  But I agree with Fly320s--she at least did something permanent and lasting, unlike the Prius buyers.  I may not agree with the politics that many of the environmentalistas claim to espouse, but I'll not put them down for taking action, whether it is tying her tubes, living in an ancient redwood for two years, or taking some other irrevokable action that doesn't hurt someone else.

I don't know if it was Oakland, but there was a woman who was paying crack whores $1000 to get sterilized.  She was attacked as a racist because the majority of women addicted to crack were Black.    Funny those people didn't jump forward to adopt all the crack babies.
