Chevy HHR ???

It seems to be GM's answer to the PT Cruiser.  I know they're FWD, and probably share drivetrain components with similar-sized vehicles in the GM lineup, aka Chevy Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion.  That means parts should be fairly common.

Supposedly, the designer of the PT Cruiser defected from Chrysler to GM, where he was placed in charge of the HHR design. 

You get your choice of either a 2.2L or 2.4L engine, so gas mileage should be pretty good, although the HHR is probably heavier than the Cobalt, G5, or Ion. For 2008, there's going to be a turbocharged version called the HHR SS, with 260 ponies to the front wheels.

Looks like the station wagon is back again.

Station wagon - yeah, something that we can haul several 50 lb sacks of feed without rupturing a disk lifting it in and out of a trunk.  

Basically, we need a more gas efficient version of a Suburban, for most everything except towing trailers and pulling Fedex trucks out of the mud.  The Suburban will stay around for that stuff.

I might be able to get a really really good deal on a 2006 with 15K miles.

Personally, I'm partial to Scoobies (that looks similar in shape to a Forrester), but a good deal is a....oh forget it.

Do you really, really, want to get a first year one? I have a policy of generally not going with the first couple of years on anything- I like to let someone else do the initial testing...

It's like the PT, but it's cool-looking instead of lame.   

The Car Talk guys (Tom and Ray, Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers), like it better than the PT Cruiser, which they say is not very reliable.  I think they also recommend the Element and the xB.

What I'd really like to get is something about 10 years old with low miles(<100K).

OTOH, there doesn't seem to be much available from that vintage that has some good space and good gas mileage.  I really don't like mini-vans.

I've got a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora with the autobahn package and the 4.0 v8 with 99,000 on it It's not for sale. Also have a 96 crown vic with only 67,000 on it. Yeah, I do buy cars from people getting too old to drive, why did you ask?

I delivered molten aluminum to a Chrysler plant for a couple years and most of the guys I knew there said the only reason they bought Chryslers was because they worked there.
