Got a GSG 1911
« on: April 07, 2011, 01:44:29 PM »
Once I see how it does at the range I'll likely be getting rid of the Rugers.

And getting a can.

So it's a .22 1911? What kind of price do those go for?

$350 down from $369.

Cost to my dealer was $320-something.

Dibs!

Let us know on the GSG, of course, but I'm happy with my Mk II for .22-ish purposes.

I have a mk I Target Ruger and a mk II 22/45 4" I bought as a training type .22.

I'm whittling down to "1911-ish pattern only" and the GSG will replace the 22/45.

Same leather and manual of arms, weight and feel as my Colts.

I think my favorite "accessory" for my 1911 is the kimber .22 conversion slide that I picked up for about $200 back when THR was good.

I picked up a GSG 1911, too.

The mags are better designed than the Rugers (they have an internal feed ramp that keeps the rounds feeding smoothly without jamming into the feedramp like my 22/45 does sometimes).

Easier to disassemble. Feels better in the hand, mags drop free without hesitation and feel like real mags. Accepts an adapter for a suppressor readily.

I'm not getting rid of my 22/45 by any means, and I don't suggest that you do, but I can tell you, that much like my 10/22, the 22/45 is getting mothballed.

Join the club I have. I only found one shop near St. Louis that had them. Some shops had them on order, some couldn't find them, and some had never heard of them.

Range report will be forth-coming.

Due to budgetary constraints, and my wife's short fingers, it has replaced my only other handgun. This means it will be a car gun, and possibly a carry gun, if we get our CCW paperwork together.

My thanks to Matt for his recommendation and advice.

Congrats!

Wring it out at the range good, and remember the fat end of the spring goes forward when reassembling. =)

You may not be as accurate as the gun, but you should at least be smarter than the gun.  :P

Apparently, the design of the guide rod was changed from a round cross-section to a cruciform type, which my gun has. There seem to be reports popping up everywhere, about the newer guide rods catching on the plug. When this happens, the bushing rotates, then the guide rod breaks.

The fellow in the below thread is talking about having some steel rods made.

http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=316604

I haven't fired mine yet, but it does seem to have a lip where the round section in the front transitions to the cruciform shape.

It looks like plastic, but I'm pretty sure it's some lightweight alloy, probably MIM. I guess it could be steel, but I haven't magnet-tested it yet.

The rest of the gun is zinc alloy.  ???

The rod seems a bit shorter than it absolutely needs to be to allow for disassembly.  Hopefully, if someone is looking to make a steel one they look at that too.  It seems like it is just shy of the bushing with no good reason to be, functionwise.

Huh? The GSG is aluminum slide, steel frame, per my understanding.

Don't confuse the GSG-1911-22 with the POS, zinc Chiappa 1911-22.

For the record, the round rod on mine works just fine.

tafkafistful,  =D

Could you post a pic of the cruciform guide rod?

I don't think the frame is steel.

I could buy aluminum now that you say it, it looked like the "in the white" portion of my LW Commander where I used hand files to undercut the trigger guard.  Although Birchwood Casey gunblue (the paste kind in the plastic tube) did work on it and I think that wouldn't blue aluminum?

Maybe I'm just a better filer than I knew, so steel cuts like buttah?

Never filed a MIM part but the thumb safety I think is steel based on how it looked in the white, I had to take it down in width a bit.

I guess the thing to draw from my experience is you can 'smith the gun, just like a 1911.

You can see the undercut and the bevel I put on the safety.  It was one of those squared off shelf hi-ride ones, I'll probably replace it when I buy the new ambi for my "real" 1911 and put on a flat mainspring housing at the same time so it matches my other two 1911 pattern guns.  Those are thin grips on it.
