People should have to get background checks before they take their guns in for repair.

I'm thinking that if it was an FFL they would have to run a 4473 to get them back. Am I wrong about that? I don't remember if I had to do that the one time I have needed professional repair work done.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Nope.  Not if you're the owner of the gun in question.

No. I've even shipped a rifle for repair to the manufacturer (CZ452 came from the factor with a burr on the sear creating an EXTREMELY heavy trigger pull) and I was able to ship it direct to CZ and they fedexed back to me.

Yup, even in CA, you can have them, even pistols, shipped directly to your front door from the repair shop.

No doubt, if they were aware of that, we'd be seeing the 'repair loophole' being talked about.

Don't need a background check to get your own gun back from a gunsmith.  You do need a background check to get your own gun back from a pawn shop.

It did appear the killers got shot up also.

Also sounds like the gun was fixed....
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
