First person shooter video games?
« on: August 12, 2005, 04:55:36 AM »
I'm a gamer, and I'm looking for some new fixes of the FPS kind.

I'm waiting for COD 2, as the original is my current favorite, but it doesn't come out for months. Does anyone know of a good FPS that doesn't require a super-duper PC to run? Mine is about three years old now, and when I built it I didn't use top-shelf stuff.

One more thing: does anyone know of any GOOD "Old West" FPSs? I love games using revolvers and lever actions, but there just aren't any that I've seen recently.

About the only FPS shooter I play (still) is MOH- Spearhead. I have COD, but I'm not really impressed with the online gameplay of it.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is at least amusing the first time through, but I haven't played that one in a year or two either.

Deus Ex: 1, definitely not 2.... Actually forces you to worry about different calibers / types of ammo, and you can't carry too much junk, just what fits in your inventory.  Not TOO realistic in the gunplay dept.

RTCW: Like brimic said, amusing, but not very realistic.  The submachineguns all seem to fire from a closed bolt, and the Mauser rifle holds 10 rounds, and the clip is fed into it like a Garand's enbloc... (but it vanishes so you can reload, ) Not to mention that it holds 10 shots, and the bolt doesn't visibly cycle.
Don't even get me started on the supernatural stuff in the game.

Operation Flashpoint: GOTY edition: Has all 3 OF games/add-ons.  Pretty good modeling of the effects of the weapons (I.E. one shot often will kill you, but not always, ) decent vehicle code, and nice use of concealment / cover.  Ok online play, IMO.

Quake 3: Good for an occasional romp, doesn't require a friggin' cray to run,

Unreal Tournament (Add on the Badlands mod availible from fileplanet.com for Western Action)
Badlands is pretty good.  The weapons are reasonably realistic, (for a game, )  There's no stupid weapons like hand-held cannons or anything like that, just what you'd pretty much expect for a western.
Gametypes are a bt limited (Capture the flag, pure deathmatch, and "wanted" gameplay are it, )

UT2003 may work well for you too, depending on the video card you have, but the number of mods for it are fairly low, since UT2004 came in next year and blew it away... IMO, they should have just skipped 2003 and brought out 2004, rather than stealing everyone's money like they did.

Project IGI: You'll probably find this in a bargin bin somewhere, or maybe even be able to download it somewhere, (not legally! Unless you can purchase it like that, not sure, )  Basic "special forces" FPS, you're dropped in, must do commando-style missions.
Not particularly hard, ok funfactor, distinctly average realism.

In addition to Badlands, you should check out the Infiltration mod for Unreal Tournament ... probably the most realistic FPS out there.

I, too, am awaiting COD2.  Also DoD:Source.

Have you tried Half-Life?  Still a lot of people playing the original CounterStrike, and Day of Defeat.  Lots of other mods, The Specialist is a Matrix-like game, lots of fun.  I think there was a western type mod for it, but not sure.

Retuirn to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a FREE standalone WWII based game that wasn't too bad, especially considering it is FREE.

Ghost Recon won't kill your system, and it was my favorite game.  Much more realistic damage, decent graphics.  Shouild be able to find it cheap, if you can find it.

If your processor is not too out of date and you're willing to put in a newer graphics card, Brothers in Arms is a real kick in the pants.  I run it on my Media rig (1.8 GHz P4, ATI  All-In-Wonder 9600xt).  Its a mix of FPS and tactics, since you control the fire and assault teams, and the occasional tank (but don't drive them).  There is a demo available to see if you like the game before shelling out the $$$ for it.

No One Lives Forever 1 and 2 are both hilarious... should work ok on older systems.  Lots of historically accurate and fun weapons.

Deus Ex is a terrific game; rather pro-gun also.  RGP elements, so not extremely simple.

System Shock 2 is an old goodie; the most tension building game I have ever played.  Could only play through it once it made me so tense.

I'm a cheap SOB so I still play Wolfenstein ET.  Never seem to get tired of it and I found a server that seems to have a lot of maps that are new to me so that keeps it fresh.  It's a great game.

COD was too scripted for my liking.  I enjoyed Battlefield 1942 a lot.  Before that Counterstrike, Deus Ex, and System Shock.

I just played through Half-life 2. Very very good fun shotgunning fascist collaborators. Runs well on medium graphic settings on my Pentium 4, 2.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Radeon 9200 card.

I think a western themed FPS would be pretty cool, too.  In addition to the stuff that people mentioned above, Iron Storm is an interesting game that will run on an older machine.  It's like WWI never ended and you're in the 1960s.  Something about it always reminded me of Stanley Kubrick.  It has a very stark, but tense element to it that I haven't encountered in any other FPS.  It has some heavy firefights as well as quiet moments where you seem to be the only one around (until a sniper's bullet finds the back of your skull).  If you want to try something odd, challenging (sometimes frustrating), at times beautiful (for graphics of its day) and likely to put some fear into you (even when the enemy seems nowhere near), check it out.  It's well worth the $10 I've seen it going for recently and if you don't like it you should be able to sell it to a friend based solely on the box cover.
For entertainment purposes only.

I'm pretty sure that there's a FPS western for XBox.

Red Dead Revolver?  Seen it in the Wal-Mart bargain bin the other day.
