I can't believe anyone is this stupid in this day and age. I have to wonder - if someone would have smacked her in the head with their laptop and seriously injured or killed her, would they even be brought up on criminal charges?

The video cut out a bit early. I think she got a tune up by the passengers, which is a good thing.
-
I'm guessing that was an air marshal there at the end of that limited video? They still have those, right?

I agree with you that it looked like a male passenger was stepping in to start the tuning process. What has the judicial system decided in regards to incidents of a passenger making a threat and other passengers tuning/restraining the threat maker?
-
The last air marshal I saw in person looked like a late 20's grad student with a backpack. denim jeans and sneakers.
no question about him being air marshal because I was late boarding and he was definitely part of an intervention taking place at boarding when everybody else was boarded but me and 1/4 of a drunk golfing foursome. fun for me anyway.
-
Yes they still have air marshals.
In fact, they have a LOT more of them since 9-11.
According to Wikipedia, on 9-11, there were approximately 30 air marshals in service.
Now there are approximately 4,000.

I don’t know of any official rulings/opinions, but the last few incidents involving good passengers restraining bad passengers have not resulted in charges. Even that incident on Southwest years ago where the passengers accidentally killed a guy by suffocation resulted in no charges being filed and that was pre-9/11.
-
This is why instead of banning smoking on planes they should require it. Not less than one cigarette every 30 minutes per passenger.
-
We have an Air Marshall that comes in the gun shop occasionally. He doesn't look like a Fed.

Go to your room.

Just let the smokers go outside to smoke.

That is the idea.

I had just finishing grabbing the popcorn to watch the fight scene/beatdown that was coming....
-
Doesn't look like she got tuned up at all. :(
I love mug shots where the perps have bruises, sutures and looking like they got tuned up.

"I literally didn't mean it literally. Literally."
-
That is the idea.
Yeah, but it wasn't always that way. High & tight, suits, socializing with the flight crew, etc.
Somebody shoulda knocked the snot out of the b....ah, her.

Meh. I have a hard time thinking tuning someone up when they are irrational due to anxiety/panic attack/nicotine fit is all that entertaining.
Good job, Mr. Badass Good Samaritan, you beat up someone who wasn't a threat to anyone except maybe her own dignity ;/
Also, why aren't flight attendants trained in basic restraint and holding techniques? I would think this sort of behavior isn't all that uncommon on airplanes, with people freeking out and such?

She did not get beat up; we just wish she did.

Liability. FAs are given very rudimentary self defense training and no offense training.

Sorry, but I wouldn't be willing to bet my life (and those I had with me) on Ms. Nic-Fit not following through on her threat. Opening an emergency exit or door in flight would be a giant ball of suck (literally). Post 9/11, you threaten to kill everyone on the plane, you are getting subdued. You have a choice. You can do it our way, or you can it our way harder.

Exactly. Just because an unstable person might not want to literally kill everyone on the plane doesn't mean they won't do something that literally kills everyone on the plane.

It is not possible to open the emergency exits or other doors in flight. You would have to be Superman to accomplish that.

If you were on that plane and the nitwit tried to open a door, would you be comfortable letting her try?

It is not possible to open the emergency exits or other doors in flight in a pressurized commercial aircraft. You would have to be Superman to accomplish that.
Fixed that a little. I have opened doors/ramps in flight many times, the highest (ramp on C2) was at 25K feet.

Good fix. I should have been a bit more specific.

I would have been comfortable giving her a smack down just for generally endangering others on the flight. Even though she could not have opened a door, there are other ways to cause serious problems in flight.
That said, if she had be my seat mate, I would have been comfortable giving her a smack down just for being an absolute inconsiderate ass. A nicotine fit does not cut it for an excuse.

If she was having "anxiety" because of nicotine cravings or whatever the excuse what about the people she may have actually set off into a panic or anxiety attack by standing up and threatening to kill them all. I think everyone of them should have been allowed at least one free swing. ;)

Windows are tough, but not indestructible, especially if she can get something heavy like a fire extinguisher. She also had some source of fire on her, apparently, and while most of the stuff there is supposed to be fire resistant, it's not all fireproof. Then there's the simplest matter of being in a relatively small enclosed space with a lot of people; just thrashing around with no skill at all could cause some nasty injuries to others. If she got her hands on a seat belt extender, swinging it around the cabin indiscriminately could result in some hospitalizations.

[tinfoil] "The Six Million Dollar Man" bionically kicked open a door on a 727 in one early episode...while he had no cape or big "S", does that count? [popcorn]

Finding outlandish threats like this is what leads to double-tapping someone crawling on the floor with an AR.

Slight difference between heavily armed cops with lots of backup and disarmed passengers trapped on a plane with a lunatic.

There is a slight difference, you are correct. However the attitude that you displayed (perhaps in jest) in your post that "anything I can think of that could happen is a credible threat and can be defended against." is very much the attitude that has been adopted by some LEO's and leads to double tapping weeping folks that are crawling on the floor.
Not everything that could be a threat is a credible threat. Context matters. A nic fitting, aggressive lady on an airplane might need to be restrained, but almost certainly does not need to be beaten into submission. "I'll kill everyone on this plane", absent some evidence that she actually could, is not reason to pretend she's threatening the lives of everyone on the plane.
I would also posit, perhaps only a little in jest, that given the amount of grouches, curmudgeons, and plain aholes on this board, perhaps we should not be quick to espouse that everyone who is disruptive and says intemperate things needs to be "tuned up".
-
Had I been on the plane I'd have been inclined to put a fist in the middle of her gob just because she was annoying me.
I don't care if she's having anxiety because of nicotine withdrawal or what.
When I fly I have serious anxiety to the point where I need to fly drugged. And the last thing I'd want to deal with is some entitled bitchy old woman telling me she's going to kill me.

That's what I was saying. Some people are scared of flying, some to the point they are barely holding on and then up jumps somebody saying she is going to kill everyone. That is a recipe for more chaos. I think FAs should be given cattle prods, they could come in handy several times during the boarding process and flight I am sure.

Speaking as one of the resident grouchy curmudgeons, I'll just say that (in general) we curmudgeons don't wander around making idle threats. You can be fairly well assured that if I were to say, "I'm going to kill everyone on this airplane" -- I would probably mean it.

I'm an angry person. If I can go from pack-a-day to none for 36 hours without turning a Parker County holding cell into a bloodbath, anyone who's already into screaming threats within a couple hours needs a beatdown before they get to the next stage.

I bet it has less to do with the lack of nicotine and more to do with the entitled princess mentality.

Not so much; I'm pretty sure most of you honyocks owe me plenty for putting up with you, but I don't beat it out of you because then I'd be expected to visit you in the hospital, which means putting up with you even more, and when you're likely to be all sore and whiny too.

I was talking about the woman on the plane, not you, but if the shoe fits...
