Title: T28 @ the airshow
Post by: BobR on June 01, 2014, 02:11:44 PM
Doing a quick look at the pictures from the airshow yesterday and was really pleased with this one. Out of nearly 400 pictures I should get a couple of keepers.

That is a very nice shot, BobR.
Maytag!  That's what we used to call them years back.  Cool airplane, neat sound.  Uses a different dash number of the same engine used in the B17.

It's very nice.Looks more like a painting than a picture though.

I'd hang it on the wall.

Most production T28s used a variant of the Wright 1820. The R2800 was fron Pratt & Whitney.  IIRC it went out of production almost as soom as WWII ended.

ETA... Strike that. My Google Fu indicates it remained in production at least through the Korean war for use in the Corsair.

Yep, the R1820-56 in the T28.  It was the R1820-97 in the B17.
(All based on my fading memory from my warbirding days.)

was that also use in the dc-3?

The T28A, Air Force version used a 800hp R1300, the Navy T28B/C used the 1425hp R1820. The C model had shortened wings and propeller blades to be used for carrier landing training.

Much nicer than the cell phone through the chain link fence pic I took this weekend of the B17 at KEFD.

The cell phone pics are probably nicer than the no pictures I took of the B17 "The Memphis Belle" which has been flying in and out of the regional airport (U42) by our house here today. It overflew pretty low a few times while we were out with the kids in the back yard this afternoon, didn't even occur to me to grab the camera.

Same plane, flying in the sun, taken with digital camera.

Today I stopped at a museum in Oregon that has the Spruce Goose and an SR-71 on display. All the pictures I took are absolutely brilliant, I just need to get them developed.

The Evergreen Air and Space Museum.  Great place.  My parents live there in McMinnville.  Dad and I used to go to the EASM on occasion when I still lived in Orygun.
There are some pretty serious stories floating around that the EASM is on its last legs financially.  I seriously hope that is not the case.

Nope.  That was the P&W R-1830.

The T-28 was about the onliest radial single-engine I recall that had a tricycle gear.  The rest, iirc, are tail draggers.

Now I know of two.

Nanchang CJ-6.  Chinese primary trainer. The CJ-5 is a copy of the Yak 18. The Yak is a tail dragger, the Chinese copies aren't. A lot of the CJ5/6 are showing up at airshows. We had 3 or 4 of them here this last weekend.

Now you know of 2+.
