He was the emcee at my uncle's induction ceremony at the Cowboy Hall of Fame back in April.  Pretty spry for someone his age but you could tell he was easily exhausted.  RIP.

I don't know.  What do you want to do?

While he was a character actor for most of his career, he was a consumate actor.  Look at his body of work http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000308/ and show me another actor with both the depth and breadth of Ernie.  If you want to roll on the floor uncontrollably, look up some of the Johnny Carson Roasts - he quietly slipped in zingers when nobody was expecting them.

We are slowly but surely losing those who went from WWII to the various acting schools and then onto the stage.  I am convinced that the experience of war had a special influence on the character of actors and their work at least equal to the influence of sound and color in films.

Who do we have replacing these folks?

Bestest movie ever! ;)

It is during the great depression in the US, and the land is full of people who are now homeless. Those people, commonly called "hobos", are truly hated by Shack (Borgnine), a sadistical railway conductor who swore that no hobo will ride his train for free. Well, no-one but "A" Number One (Lee Marvin), who is ready to put his life at stake to become a local legend - as the first person who survived the trip on Shack's notorious train.

The featured music at his memorial will be "Variations on a Theme by Joycelyn Elders" performed by a soloist yet to be named...

Heck of a way to go out.

I had totally forgotten about Willard I read the book before the movie came out - both were great.

If actors like Borgnine were such class acts, maybe they were lending Hollywood a veneer of credibility it never deserved. Entertainment media have been fostering moral and political delusion, and continue to do so. Perhaps it's better if the younger generations of actors don't inspire confidence.

Yeah, that was in the 1st episode of the USA Cable version that was made in Canada.  It wasn't actually Ernest Borgnine; they filmed a stand-in actor who resembled Borgnine to play the cgharacter, Dominic Santini.  Jan Michael Vincent only appeared in the 1st episode too.
The USA series made use of stock footage from the CBS series (they couldn't afford to operate the real Bell 222 that was the Airwolf helicopter) and while some of the stories were OK the series took a big hit in quality overall.  It lasted one season on cable versus three on CBS.

The only movies I remember him in were Poseidon Adventure and Escape from New York. Haven't seen either in years. I do recall his zingers (dry, in a Don Rickles fashion) on late night t.v.

The Dirty Dozen, Bad Day at Black Rock, so many more, even as a character actor his performances were memorable.

He was great in 'Marty'.

Really enjoyed his work and humor in his other roles.

My late mother went to high school with him. She used to see him in McHale's navy and she said he was a clown even in high school.

Also played on Andy Griffith.

And to ask who is going to replace them, it reminds me of a George Jones song, "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?"
