Blazing mouse sets fire to house

A US man threw a mouse he had found in his home onto a pile of burning leaves - only to see it run away and burn his house down.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, found a mouse in his home and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," he said.

Though no one was injured, the house and everything in it was destroyed.

"I've seen numerous house fires, but nothing as unique as this one," Fire Department Captain Jim Lyssy said.

New Mexico has seen several major blazes after unseasonably dry and windy conditions which have destroyed 10 homes and devastated more than 53,000 acres (21,200 hectares) of land.

I can't say I feel sorry for this man.

He couldn't find a better way to kill the mouse?

Faced with the same problem and lacking other means, I bashed the rodent's head in with a rock.  Was a bit rough on me, but not on the mouse.  He went almost instantly.

But burning the critter alive?

That does seem cruel, even for a rodent. I'm not sure it's as bad as glue traps though. What was he doing burning leaves in this drought? Seems like several layers of poor consideration on his part here. It's fortunate it was only his own house that burned.

I can't imagine a mouse carrying enough flame into a house to do much.  Unless the fire is right next to the door and there's a pool of gasoline on the other side of that door.

I think it's an insurance scam.

Well, given that the mouse probably headed for its nest...

And a mouse nest is nothing more than a wonderful source of tinder...

Yeah, I've no problem believing this at all.

Ugh, I tried the glue trap once.  Never again.  I ended up smooshing him with a shovel before I buried him.

Why was this guy burning leaves anyway?  We have a burn ban on here in Texas.

I had to put a mouse down once.

Yup.

The ball was sticking so much it drove me nuts.
