See, this is why they should have outfitted the rover with a proper nuclear reactor instead of an RTG, with an self-destruct Chernobyl mode. Or perhaps just a few time delayed Davy Crocket projectiles that the rover could drop and drive away from.

Also note that the images are taken from 200 miles up. That would make the "spiders" pretty freaking huge.
Also the rock outcrop they are on looks like polished bones.

This might partially answer AZ's question - the article states a possibility is gas explosions. I'm more inclined (or want to) think that it's microorganisms blooming during warm periods.

Yup, whatever's sticking up out of the sand resembles the carapace of some sort of giant insect, given that these were shot from 200 miles out.

Actually, I did have a dissenting opinion: That these are geysers of a sort, and they are blowing black iron sand from the subsurface when it gets warm enough for such activity, and then the black iron sand oxidizes to the common red rust we see everywhere on the planet as the season shifts to cooler.
