Over 80,000 M1s might be disposed of

S Korean Govt wanted to sell them to US collectors. Our State Dept said no. They are afraid that the weapons may end up in the wrong hands.

Yep, it's to the smelter or the bottom of the ocean for the M1s and carbines...

To the CMP they must go.

This story has been circulating for a while.

As I understand it, the issue is the U.S. gave the rifles to South Korea, and now they want to sell them back to us.  Apparently, the terms under which we gave the rifles forbids that.  Unfortunately, I don't have the reference handy, but it's been discussed to death on various gun forums.

Why is there so much discussion in the article, including by Simcox of the NRA, about how the M1 accepts high-cap external magazines? I could understand the journalists and anti-gun folk getting it wrong, but I'd have hoped the NRA would know better...

They're talking about the 770k M1 CARBINES that SK wants to sell us, not the M1 30-06 Garand.

That's the link I read, it says M1 Rifles with regards to the magazines, but maybe whoever wrote it is confusing the carbines and rifles.

Edit: Nevermind, it just says "M1s", while discussing both rifles and carbines up further.

Hell a M1 could also be a tank.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

But like the Rifle, the Tank also lacks an external magazine  :P

Sucks on the carbines.  Last CMP update said they were out of carbines.

I'd love to see those come in via the CMP to avoid somebody like Century having to import mark them.  I missed on the carbines from CMP..  never quite got around to it but I did get my Garand.

I got my IBM before they ran out, though.

I love asking if people want to see my IBM.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

"Asked why the M1s pose a threat, the State Department spokesman referred questions to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. ATF representatives said they would look into the question Monday afternoon, but on Wednesday they referred questions to the Justice Department. DOJ spokesman Dean Boyd referred questions back to the State Department.

"The White House referred questions on the issue to the Pentagon, which referred questions to the U.S. Embassy in South Korea, which deferred back to the State Department."
