Online resource for basic gun information?
« on: February 21, 2018, 06:39:00 PM »
On another site, there's a member trying to learn about firearms, and I was trying to find a source of basic information for her. Maybe a website with articles that explain how guns work, different types of guns, gun laws in America, etc. I've found a number of sources for legal and political information, but where could I send someone for basic knowledge (what a cartridge is, difference between semi-auto and full-auto, etc)?

I've checked the NRA website, the NSSF, TFL, and I'm surprised I'm coming up empty.

Cornered Cat is kinda my go to for "beginner gun stuff".

It's slanted towards carry, but has a lot of good basic easy to digest information.

Or here. We aren't always gentle, but we can answer a wide swath of gun questions.

Thanks. I'm looking for something she can browse. More of an encyclopedia than a Q&A situation.

Don't forget the yootubz, there are tons of videos on there that are short and often cover one subject at a time.

Thanks, 320; and Bob, I hadn't thought of YouTube, either. Thanks.

While out of date in terms of modern stuff, Hatcher's Notebook is on line somewhere for free.  I'm surprised how often a "modern" question comes up where the answer can be found in the Notebook.  But I think the "last" gun Julian Hatcher spoke of was the prototype of the AR-15.

I'm having trouble finding an online copy, but the worth of my recommendation can be confirmed since there are so many sources of the printed book itself still available from online sources.  This, despite the fact that its original edition by General Hatcher was in 1948 or so.

That ought to tell you something about how good it is.  You can pick it up and turn to a random page and it will be fascinating and informative right from there.*

I'm on my second or third copy of it due to thumb-wear.

* 'Cept for the ballistic tables.  Informative, but not fascinating.  Oh, and WRT modern laws.

WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.
