Looks more like a fancy multi-channel radio than a cell phone to me.

That would be because the idea is actually quite old, and the cellphone design is dated. This thing floats up a couple of times a year, and every time it is presented as a new and uber-dangerous megagun. I've been seeing it in the news for at least five or six years now, and it's probably older than that.

I was going to say that this particular "news" story resurfaces from time to time, and I remember the last time being at least a couple years ago. ;)

Is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling that was created entirely to justify the shooting by police of someone reaching for a cellphone?

I am curious from where came the mafia injection. While the mafia certainly have a history of canning people - usually in pieces - a purpose designerd and built cellphone gun is more the kind of thing an intelligence agency would develope and use.
