Westwood man quits crime after victims get best of him

By Kimball Perry • kperry@enquirer.com • May 24, 2010

A man who told police he was going to quit crime because he kept getting bested by his elderly victims was convicted today.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Melba Marsh last week presided over the case of Mike Bedinghaus without a jury. Today, she found Bedinghaus guilty of robbing two women.

Bedinghaus, 21, of Westwood, used a gun to rob 78-year-old Betty Scheid in November as she was getting into her car at a Ferguson Road shopping center in Westwood. She argued with the robber and negotiated with him to keep her purse if she gave him the $37 she had.

In March, he used a knife to rob 82-year-old Marian Briede, who used her keys to beat Bedinghaus, who then was caught and confessed he robbed both women to support a heroin addiction.

When Bedinghaus is sentenced June 24, Marsh can send him to prison for more than 25 years.
