Invasive Burmese pythons are eating the Everglades free of other wild animals:

Some lefty dipshinola will likely propose "constrictor condom" program, but the author proposes a bounty system.

Acouple o years ago, they found a 12 foot python under a deck in Gaitherburg Maryland
They think it was holing up for the winter under a house in a crawlspace, and spending the summers eating pets.
-
how many snaken nuggets can you mechanically separate from a 20 foot python?
-
What caliber for a twelve foot python?
Where do you aim? The head?
-
Good question because some people value the head for certain items.
But also think of the amount of food in a 150# snake. Not a lot of extra crap. Mainly all muscle to begin with.
-
Transplant them to DC =D

Thank you but we have plenty of snakes in this area already.

How effective would flir and nightvision optics be in hunting them down at night?

How effective would flir and nightvision optics be in hunting them down at night?
Cold-blooded animal and infrared? I'm betting very poor. Other forms of night vision would obvioulsy be more useful.
-
That's what I was wondering.
Short of baiting them with live tethered critters I'm not sure what the options are for tracking them.
-

I2 sensitive to the near-IR, along with big, honking near-IR spot & flood lights FTW.
-
I lol'd at this:
I don’t know what the right number is but for the sake of argument if we had a hunting season in which you could bring in unlimited number of Burmese pythons for $50 per pound, my hunch is Burmese pythons would be erecting memorials to the great snake genocide of 2012.
As for using nightvision/FLIR - would snakes be colder than the surrounding area?
-
Are we going to need more snake recipes?
-
gonna need a bigger boat
-
need a yuppie snake cookbook

With "artisan" recipes for snakeys.

I'm sure the snake would be lower contrast on FLIR than a mammal, but I'd think they'd still show up. Being "cold blooded" does not automatically make a reptile "cold", just that they don't expend metabolic energy on maintaining a particular body temperature. They still curl up, find shade, sun themselves, open their mouths and get in/out of the water to manage their temperature.

the everglades would be a "hot" environment, though. How would you know that its a curled up python and not just a pile of rotting swamp junk?

I would suggest politicians but I'm sure there are things that even snakes won't eat

.45 to the base of the head. Or an axe.

Bullshite! If I encounter a 12 foot python, I am leaving, quickly.

Snakes have very few vitals =(
It's kinda like trying to kill somebody by shooting them in the leg.

All you need to do is let the snake wrap itself around you, and then you can stab it in the top of the head with a pocket knife.
=D

We used to get some big Black Snakes in the chicken house.
How to catch a Black Snake.
Attach a #2 fish hook to a thin wire leader.
Attach wire leader to a solid anchor.
Poke small hole in egg, carefully insert fish hook.
enjoy the hilarity.
-
There is no freaking way I am attacking a 12 foot python with an axe!!
I'm liking the 12 gauge loaded with 00 buckshot. I'm not seeing any other option other than a head shot, better yet, multiple head shots.
-

Yes, indeed.
For big pythons, I might move on down to 12ga #4 buckshot, so there is less void space in the pattern.

No matter how destructive the pythons are, they still deserve a clean kill without being tortured first.

Could be worse. I would call in an air strike.

I'm confused by this comment.. does this guy think that a hunter is going to pay $50/lb for the privilege to hunt an invasive species? Is it supposed to be a $50/lb bounty to the hunter? Either way doesn't make much sense.

I'll stand waaayyyy back here and hold your beer.

Something in the 500kt-1mt range. Dust off...orbit...you know the drill.
*Shudder*

A couple things I learned about pythons while living in Souf Effrica.
They like long grass near water sources (Everglades, duh). They have been known to surprise pedestrian passers-by.
All their teeth point in inwards, making it next to impossible to wrest yourself from their grasp. Their jaw muscles are necessarily strong. If you and the python have not mutually agreed to part ways, the only way you are getting your leg loose is by taking his teeth with you.
I read of a guy who got some snake teeth stuck in him just that way and nearly died of a resultant infection (in the bush).
Lastly. Who in their right mind would go hunting for a mother*expletive deleted*ing 20-ft (or larger!) snake in the mother*expletive deleted*ing everglades?

Looking at snake anatomy online I see the best place to shoot one would be in the first 25% of its length. That gives you your best shot at lungs, heart and large arteries. Or CNS stoppage with a head shot / severing the spine.
-
Seems to me the way to go would be a shotgun, buckshot or slugs, or a dutch load thereof in case you miss with the slug. Course if you miss once, depending on the trajectory of the reptile in question, you could already be Snake Lunch.
-

Somebody has to keep the mother*expletive deleted*ing snakes off the mother*expletive deleted*ing plane!

I wonder if M193 fragments in pythons?
You don't need slugs, these suckers are skinny. 3-5 shot FTW. You'd want shotguns with the occasional rifleman on hand for longer distance shots.
What's a snake's favorite subject?
Hisstory.

Phook That.
I hate snakes. Nuke the everglades and start over.....

Touch screens suck ass sometimes.

Please continue your regularly scheduled snake debate.

Help me here.
The snakes are an invasive species, yes?
They're not native to the Everglades, yes?
So why are they just not declared a pest?

One answer: squirrel kissing liberals.

I don't think so! That just ruins the skin.
Come on guys, you're all being little girls. A snake that big doesn't move with the speed of a ... diamondback rattler, for instance, that hangs out on the dunes here. (Oh, sorry Scout and Jocassee, did I forget to mention those? Oops!) A snake that size moves a good bit slower and you have ample opportunity to approach it and end it.
And Tallpine. I realize snakes don't have as many vitals. But they do die if you sever the head. This can be accomplished with ammo or an axe. Since you boys seem so worried about getting close enough to use an axe, I'll handle it for you.
Geesh.
-

Not this boy, I'm the one who suggested gloves as the only weapon.

Also, not a boy.
And I ain't going NEAR that thing.

The creatures in DC not only eat their own kind, they throw them under the bus to tenderize them first. It's a group version of "two enter, but only one comes out".
stay safe.

So you could bait the one end with tuna, which catches the cat which baits the trap for the snake and then the camera aperture guillotine cuts off the snakes head feeding the trapped cat for the next round.
You could set out 100 traps and decimate the giant snakes and make use of feral kittahs
