Just as the title says. I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash. What other artists should I check out? Thanks.

-
Just about every male country singer from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s
-
I wasn't alive then. Got any names? Songs? Should I just start buying songs from the billboard country charts from that era?
A few more specifics would be appreciated.
-
Doc Watson, I am a big fan of his version of Tennessee Stud. =)
-
Oh. my - let's see ...
Ray Price
Johnny Horton
Jim Reeves
Leroy Van Dyke
Merle Haggard
Bobby Bare
George Jones
Henson Cargill
Marty Robbins
Hank Snow
....
plus:
George Morgan
Jerry Wallace
Gene Watson
Hank Williams Sr & Jr
Waylon Jennings
Johnny Paycheck
Bill Anderson (never liked his voice, but a great songwriter)
Tom T. Hall
Johnny Rodriguez
....
Look up "Grand Old Opry" and see if you can find lists from those years.
-
Gordon Lightfoot
-
Gordon Lightfoot
Yeah, I was gonna mention him (we're you reading my mind?) but he is a little more folksy than hard country.
And Ian Tyson, both from his early folk years with Sylvia Fricker, and his later western/cowboy years ~1980 to present (though he's pretty much lost his voice now :( )
If I could roll back the years.....
-
Red Sovine (sp?)
Dave Dudley
Billy Walker
Charlie Pride
Mel Tillis
Glenn Campbell
Roy Clark
Buck Owens (not too fond of him, myself)
Hoyt Axton =)
Faron Young
Roy Drusky
David Houston
Ferlin Husky
Sonny James
Hank Locklin
Bob Luman
Webb Pierce
Ernest Tubb
Don Williams

Good taste. I'm frequently glad that the soundtrack of my youth consisted of songs like that, rather than Prince, et al.
-
Yeah. I sometimes went with my mom to barrel races way back when and she would often listen to stuff like that, and with my dad usually listening to classic rock I grew up enjoying a wide style of music which I'm thankful for.
-
Huh, no mention of Willie Nelson? Please tell me I missed him when I scanned the posts before mine.
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
Merle Haggard
All have some serious Cash flavor.
Hank Williams Sr., of course, deserves place of honor in any country music list.
Also, to satisfy some of the rockabilly that was burnt into Cash, but is strangely absent in previous posts:
Carl Perkins
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Hank Williams, Jr
Bill Haley
Roy Hall
Last, go to pandora.com and set up a Johnny Cash station and pay attention to who is selected to play on that "station."

I just downloaded this off of amazon. It's ok. It's sounds like someone is playing a guitar around a campfire though.
My three favorite Cash songs are "God's gonna cut you down", "The Man comes around" and "Folsom Prison Blues". All three of those songs have far more dynamic range in both the vocals and the instruments than "Tennessee stud". Cash's songs are just so darn powerful I love it.
-
Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, Charlie Walker, Charley Pride (his old stuff).
Also check out Martina McBride's album "Timeless". It's all old classics, old (maybe original) arrangements, and played on 1960's instruments and equipment. The first track on the album is Hank Williams "You Win Again", and before the introduction is over she's already hit her first homerun. The musicians are obviously having fun with it; you can here them occasionally channeling Floyd Cramer, Ernest Tubb, etc.

Doing this now. Thanks!

Huh, no mention of Willie Nelson?
Because he's the anti-Johnny Cash, perhaps? Because he is a hippy? Because his voice gets tiresome after a while?

Willie may be a pot-smoking hippie, but was never the wild man that Cash was. Cash forgot more about living a life of dissipation than Willie ever knew.

Or the performer.

Or the performer.
Debatable. They were both pretty good, but too much of either wore on the ears after a while. Cash had the advantage of being able to pivot to gospel music.
-
No one's mentioned Marty Robbins?......y'all are just shameful.....
-
Waylon Jennings
Pandora is playing the Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson combo called "A good hearted Woman" right now. I like this one. It's not as hard as Cash but it's still pretty good.
EDIT: "I'm a Ramblin Man" is pretty good too.

And there ain't no good chain gang.

I read that the first time as "Pantera is playing Waylan Jennings" and was intrigued...

How has Jerry Clower not been mentioned yet?

"Knock 'im out, John"
(has anybody say Merle Haggard yet?)

I recall some metal group back in the 1990s covered Aretha's "Chain of Fools." Good music will out over genre.

Go back and look at my first list :P

It's sounds like someone is playing a guitar around a campfire
So ???
-
Will check in to comment tomorrow when I'm sober. Cincident to which, I missed George Jones and David Allen Coe in my cursory scan..
'Night, all.
-
Geez, I'm getting old and forgetful, but I did mention George Jones in my first list I think.
Another good one is Stonewall Jackson.
Don't be angry that I didn't mention him sooner.

Dynamic range? Is that what songs are judged on? ??? I just thought it was a good ballad, hopefully accompanied by some quality guitar pickin'.

If that don't do it, I guess you'll have to settle for Alan Jackson and George Strait.

playing at a campfire is one of the few benefits to owning an acoustic guitar. [popcorn] a strat or LP is just out of place.

Goober and the Peas
Why have I never heard of this band before?
I also kind of like these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUP5rwVNJko (not very Johnny Cash tho')

You did, Tallpine. As i noted, that was a "brownn lightning:-incuced reading comprehension failure on my part. Covered a lot of the rest of my list, as well.

IMHO -one of the most overlooked country performers ever - VERN GOSDIN
A little history- Gosdin was part of the Bakersfield California music scene. He worked with a lot of big names, not only in country, but folk rock, rock, bluegrass and gospel as well. The guy was awesome.

The music is great, but the host says "whackadoodle" way too much. ;/

You have a problem with the deceased Mr Chapin?

You have a problem with the deceased Mr Chapin?
Every time I hear The Cat's in the Cradle. Which is way too often, thank you. "Cat's in the Cradle" is like "God Bless the USA." If you only heard it once, it would be a great song. If you heard it twice, it would be OK. The third time around, you just want to punch the artist in the face.
Honestly, most of his music I've heard from my wife's Inigo Montoya album. It could be that I just don't like Mr. Patinkin's singing voice.

Get yourself signed up to Spotify as soon as it is available, if it's not already.
Not exactly in the Cash vein, but a hoarse singer with a bar-room brawl of a back-up band - the first three Felice Brothers albums. The new one is a bit of a new avenue, but the older ones are really steeped in various American music traditions.
Love me tenderly (http://youtu.be/xPLE3ynzu7s)
Rockefeller Drug Law Blues (http://youtu.be/2f6FESddmQ8)
Greatest Show on Earth (http://youtu.be/8Lbm4r1KN9U) - obligatory pointing out of gun reference in song "she keeps a .38 Smith & Wesson at her side"
Fantastic live. Saw them at the End of the Road festival last September, one of the few bands I'd really go out of my way to see again.

There are also a lot of new acts that both stick to the old style, as well as have created what I consider a fusion style (not modern country, but a cross of alt rock and bluegrass/old country)
The Civil Wars.

Ironically enough Harry Chapin died in a fiery car crash. ;)

Welcome to my world of country music =)
The race is on to name as many classic singers as possible.
Pardon me if I'm sentimental, but this has been a thread for the good times.
-
Kenny Seratt (http://youtu.be/5ReorpTEKi4), who sounds more like Merle Haggard than Merle does.
