Damn song
« on: October 09, 2018, 08:38:36 PM »
Got stupid songs stuck in my head. There have been scurrilous rumours that I have crap taste in music. Be that as it may, I love good covers.

In this case, it was a terrible song the first time, my kid gets an intro into how weird 80s music was, and I love the band. Weezer covers Toto.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mk5Dwg5zm2U And oh yeah, that's Weird Al in the video doing a cover of a Weezer video while pretending to be the Weezer guy singing Toto.

Even better, some ad on TV for who knows what is using Sympathy for the Devil. But screw you Mick Jagger, it's the Lemmy version!!!!

Both songs stuck on loop in my addlepated brain.

Loved that one. People don't expect scream rocker to have an excellent voice.

Africa redux was excellent.

Really like Disturbed's cover too.

Meh. I kind of have the same problem with it that Hawkmoon has with a lot of renditions of the Star Spangled Banner: way too much embellishment.

Part of what makes the original timeless is the simplicity. Just two guys and a guitar track.

Disturbed's version is almost the complete opposite. The only way they could have taken it further away from the original would have been to do a Metal cover instead. (Although, sometimes switching genres can have surprisingly good results, so maybe they should have gone with a metal version...).

I'm not saying it's bad, but it's just not nearly as good as the original.

Well in that case, skip Draiman and give it the Slipknot treatment. That'd be a fine mess.

I liked the Disturbed version. Sounded pretty simple to me. Just him singing and a piano as the main part, with violins... giving a bit of backgroundness; and some light embeloshments with a drum cymbal, I think, and an acoustic guitar in the second half. But all that extra stuff is mostly for background.

I like the Weezer version, although I prefer the original. Interestingly, the music video is done like their Undone-The Sweater Song video. I bet it's simply because it's Weird Al doing it so it's kind of like a parody of that video.

So Weird Al... replaced Weezer's singer... doing Toto's Africa... with the original lyrics.

“Fear of death increases in exact proportion to increase in wealth,” Hemingway once said. Today, many of us have become rich in the currency of cowardice. We have so many things and so few experiences. We are desperate to live as long as possible, not as large as possible. We are so afraid to say goodbye to the world that we never say hello.

Sometimes you have to use displacement to get a song out of your head.
Try “the lion sleeps tonight” with that goofy

Thanks, got that covered. It was the sweater song stuck in my head, and then for no reason whatsoever it became the Robert Earle Keene Christmas song. Maybe because a co-worker talks all about AA.
