South Korea to sell cache of M1 Garands!
« on: September 25, 2009, 08:51:37 AM »
Oh, happy day!  I thought that large stocks of M1s had dried up and that prices would be skyrocketing over the next few years.  Looks like we'll have at least one more chance to get them at reasonable prices:

SEOUL, Korea –-(AmmoLand.com)- South Korea’s defense ministry said Wednesday it plans to raise tens of millions of dollars by selling more than 100,000 aging US-supplied rifles to gun enthusiasts in the United States.

The article fails abysmally.

A good news article has the 5 W's. Who, what, when, where, and why.

It got 3. Who, what, and why.

I'm sorry, but the most important two are WHEN and WHERE!!!!
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Cool.  It would be nice to pick up an inexpensive one.  Even if it is beat up, it might be a good project gun.

Washington has approved South Korea’s plan to sell about 86,000 M1 Garand rifles and 22,000 M1 carbine rifles, together valued at 108 million dollars, the ministry said.

108,000 rifles valued at 108million equals $1000 each. Nothing cheap there.

Yep.  I noticed that, too.

Definitely a retailer like Mitchell's, or maybe even Century (yech... can you imagine a Garand with their import marks on it?).  CMP won't be getting these.

I wouldn't get too excited.

Anybody remember the Blue Sky M1 Garands, brought back from Korea a decade or so ago?

Those things were gawd-awful, and it made the worst of the DCM/CMP Garands look unissued by comparison.

True, but who assessed their value, and will they really get that much for them?  I imagine they're going to sell for whatever an importer is willing to pay.  They'd have to be pristine for the first middle man to pay that much.

Yeah, brand new Garands are $1000.  A used one out of surplus wouldn't retail for that.  I certainly wouldn't believe any importers would pay that.

Springfield Armory is making them still.  (or at least they were a few years ago)

I don't think they are, there is no mention of them on the site or in their current catalog at all.

Huh.  Well, I bought one ~2002, 2003.  It was definitely new production.

Yes, Springfield Armory Inc. did make new production Garands for a few years.  I was stupid enough to buy one.  It was an inaccurate piece of junk that jammed frequently.  After several attempts to improve its performance, I gave up and sold it.

I still have my original ones, though.  Still reliable and deadly accurate.

Huh.  Mine hasn't ever jammed.  I've been quite pleased with it.

But does it come with a velvet painting of Elvis? That's the kicker right there.

My understanding of the late-production Springfield, Inc. (Not The U.S. Springfield Armory, they shut down under MacNamara) M1 Garands is that they used cast Century (Australian) receivers mated with WWII/Korean War production USGI surplus parts and new barrels.

Not particularly a "new" M1 Garand, but pretty close.  ;)

In many of the milsurp and Garand forums, there were reports that some of the parts in the Springfield, Inc., Garands were indeed milsurp - heavily used milsurp, with the rust cleaned off and a repark.

A year or two back, I remember reading that the CMP had spoken with the Koreans about bringing back some M1s (the way they did the Greek Garands and Italian & Bavarian carbines) but ending up declining due to the poor condition of the Korean rifles.

Like I stated above, the previous batch of Korean bring-back M1 Garands looked like they had been used to beat-start a Jeep.  I'd take the worst-example DCM/CMP woodless M1 Garand and re-stock it over another Blue Sky type of import any day.  I even saw one Blue Sky Garand that had the muzzle counterbored almost to the depth of the gas port due to cleaning rod wear.   :O

We'll have to see how much for the carbines.  And the condition.
